Personnel: Chris Murphy (violin); Chris Murphy ; David J. Carpenter (bass instrument); D.J. Bonebrake (drums). Recording information: La Leyenda & Cole; Little People. The best of a series of conceptually connected albums released by Kufala Recordings in 2004-2005, On a Blue Afternoon, subtitled "Jazz Violin Music," sets Chris Murphy's violin in front of a basic small-combo rhythm section consisting of bassist David J. Carpenter and drummer D.J. Bonebrake. (Yes, the guy from X, who's always been a jazz player at heart.) There's nothing fancy on this set of Murphy/Carpenter originals; Murphy's jazz-based playing is closer to Joe Venuti's classical-influenced swing than Stephane Grappelli's earthy, gypsy-influenced, folk-based style, and the overall feel of the album is of the laid-back West Coast cool school. That said, it's rarely merely pretty, and several tracks -- particularly the graceful "Orange Then Blue," which features some gorgeous pizzicato passages -- have melodies that would stand up to fuller arrangements. The jazz violin trio will always be a specialist's taste, but On a Blue Afternoon is strong enough to be of interest to a wider audience. ~ Stewart Mason On A Blue Afternoon Music Chris Murphy On A Blue Afternoon Songs On A Blue Afternoon Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Electric violin effects, both literally & figuratively Time – 47:49 -- Chris Murphy (former violinist of Ponticello) is now fronting a trio with bass and drums, and “On a Blue Afternoon” has all original jazz violin music written by Murphy and bassist David J. Carpenter. On drums is well-known Los Angeles percussionist D. J. Bonebreak. The trio appears throughout the L.A area at bistros, cafes, clubs, coffeehouses, street fairs and markets. This album has a nice relaxed feel, shared breaks give each band member a piece of the action, and there are some occasional interludes of inspired improvisation (“Baxter’s Back”) and others that lack a little excitement or uniqueness (“Cliff Diving”).
Chris Murphy was born in 1966 in Pearl River, NY to an Irish father and Sicilian mother. Although he had an early interest in drums, he eventually settled on violin. At age 22, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston to study jazz composition. After writing songs with some rock bands and graduating from NEC, he made a living by playing fiddle in an Irish band. In 1992, Chris formed a folk rock band called “Border Patrol with Chuck Vath.” Their self-titled album was produced by David Lindley, but the band broke up shortly after it was finished. Freelance work found Murphy producing folk rock albums and playing in a Gypsy band. Murphy moved to Seattle in 1997 to be the Music Director at a nightclub. He formed his trio, Ponticello, in 1998 to perform original music and record four albums. A 2002 move to L.A. led to his recording with Sophie B. Hawkins and Adam Cohen (Leonard's son). Ponticello disbanded in 2004, and Chris Murphy’s albums are now being released under his own name.
The title cut is sweet and mellow, and other pieces (Violin Improvisation #1 and #2) border on being more whimsical. “Orange then Blue” progresses with dreamy languor, and I preferred the subtle more laid-back bite of this album to Murphy more raucous “Juniper.” Murphy creates some electric effects on his violin, both literally and figuratively. There are times when the emotional excitement of the music is thrilling, but there are others when the tunes come across a tad mundane. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

On A Blue Afternoon
$12.39 Solo performer: Even Johansen (vocals, various instruments). Recorded at Magnetic Sound Studios, Bergen, Norway. Recording information: Magnetic Sounds, Bergen, Norway (2000). Even Johansen's debut solo album materialized out of a collection of songs that he wrote but didn't feel fit the vibe of his band Libido. And it is a solo album in the true sense of the word, as he plays every note in addition to producing and recording the album himself. Quiet & Still has a suspended, luminescent quality, as if it hangs off somewhere by itself, on the horizon, part real and part placid hallucination. The melodies often take a while to unfold fully, and the songs slowly build steam before they release all their pent-up emotions, but once they do, it is like a door being unlocked. There is a glassy quality to songs like "The Recluse," "Bullet to Your Heart," and "Nothing Hurts Now" that makes it feel like your heart has been enclosed in a prison of windows, separating you from the world even as it forces you to watch day-to-day existence go on without you. Others ("Easily Undone," the cover of Phil Lynott's "Dancing in the Moonlight") open like broad Western vistas offering to be traveled. Throughout, Johansen borrows the languid, bleeding tone from Ennio Morricone's film music and the rustic guitars of country without sounding remotely like either. The music emerges out of the same beautifully wistful place as the music of Radiohead, Travis, and Poor Rich Ones, but it has its own glistening mood. Johansen was correct not to use these songs in the band context. ...

On A Blue Afternoon
$13.89 The Beat Junkie crew-member and DJ/producer for West Coast independent group Dilated Peoples, DJ Babu digs in his crates, juggling 20 sublevel hip-hop 12-inches on this compilation mixtape. Originally released in 1997, THE WORLD FAMOUS BEAT JUNKIES VOL. 1 sees Babs choosing from an eclectic group of mid-1990s underground artists representing both coasts (and Canada). VOL. 1 features joints by Kool Keith, the Jungle Brothers, Natural Resource, Chcolair, Company Flow, J-Live, the Arsonists, Rasco, Black Attack, and Camp Lo, among others. Turntablism: at times, extraordinary. At others, kind of like watching a musical circus act. Luckily, the first mix album put out by the Beat Junkies collective gives the reigns to International Turntablist Federation world-champion (and Dilated Peoples member) DJ Babu with very few moments of stylistic silliness. This turntablist mix simply knows when to let the actual tunes take center stage. So, while there is more than enough deck trickery, Babu lets songs such as Kool Keith's "Lovely Lady" or the De La Soul, A Tribe ...
