| | De La Soul Stakes Is High CD (1996)
Hip Hop Mixtape
$11.65 De La Soul: Pos Plug Wonder Why, Dave "Dr.ama," (rap vocals); Maseo. Additional personnel: Common, Mos Def, Truth Enola (rap vocals); Zhane, Jazzyfatnastees (vocals). Producers: De La Soul, Spearhead X, Ogee, Skeff Anslem, Jay Dee. Engineers: Guido Osorio, Tim Latham. Recorded at World Recording Facility and Platinum Island, New York, New York. Audio Mixer: Tim Latham. Recording information: Platinum Island Recording Studios, New York, NY; World Recording Facility. Photographer: Eric Johnson . Unknown Contributor Role: Maseo. Stakes Is High is often overshadowed by its predecessors in the De La Soul discography and, upon its release, it was lost in a summer of great import and consequence. Released on the same day as Nas' alter-ego epic It Was Written and sandwiched between albums like Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt and OutKast's ATLiens, it's very possible that Stakes Is High didn't get its rightful burn in respective tape decks and CD players. Aside from that, hip-hop was fully embroiled in the East Coast vs. West Coast beef, something in which the Native Tongues vanguards were seeming nonplayers. But it's under these conditions that De La offered an album that was not only sonically excellent and creative and pure, but an album with the year's most relevant and prescient message. The stakes were indeed high. Inter-genre violence was bubbling beneath the surface, overshadowing the turn hip-hop was taking -- a turn away from what was a mid-'90s renaissance of the late-'80s golden age excellence, quickly evolving into what is now known as the jiggy era. On "The Bizness" -- a song featuring the quickly maturing Common before his lyrical touchstone One Day It'll All Makes Sense -- Dave spits "Do not connect us with those champagne-sippin' money-fakers." Hip-hop was at a crossroads, a precipice -- whatever you'd like to call it -- and De La were concerned. "Supa Emcees" asked "Whatever happened to the MC?" and cautioned "MCing ain't for you!" "Dog Eat Dog" asserted that folks were "fucking my love in all the wrong places" -- an obvious metaphor. "Baby Baby Baby Baby Ooh Baby" is a sharp satire of the Bad Boy-style hip-hop that was beginning its reign, fit with a beat as Hitmen-esque as an '80s R&B revision with Posdnuos rhyming in a conspicuously Biggie-like cadence. No, this was not an unabashed hip-hop classic like 3 Feet High and Rising and De La Soul Is Dead, or as provocative and fresh as some ...
| | Stephan Remmler CD (1986) Import
Hip Hop Mixtape
$17.45 When German new wave band Trio broke up in 1985, the movement had long since lost the impact and vitality it had in the early '80s. The group's leader, Stephan Remmler, began work on a solo effort shortly afterwards, and despite the fact that German-language pop music was disappearing from the charts again, he managed to score two massive hits with his self-titled 1986 album: its first single, "Keine Sterne in Athen" ("No Stars in Athens") is a catchy and witty little tune that sounds like a perfect transition from Trio's minimalistic mew wave punk to Remmler's new musical direction, a somewhat ironic fusion of the German schlager -- the kitschy, simplistic pop music of earlier generations -- and modern pop. The album's other hit single, "Alles Hat Ein Ende (Nur Die Wurst Hat Zwei)" ("Everything Has an End [Only a Sausage Has Two]"), even became a staple of the German carnival, getting played over and over again in the alcohol-induced cheeriness of the beer tents. Musically, Remmler's writing has always been seeking simplicity -- short, repetitive riffs and basic rhythms, concise lyrics and catchy melodies -- so his departure from the new wave punk of his former group isn't as radical as it might seem at first listen. Remmler is still writing songs with the same characteristics, but he explores other genres this time around -- genres which embrace simplicity, and which have always been sneered at by critics and "serious" music listeners alike: schlager, children's ...

Hip Hop Mixtape
$8.65 Dirty South haters are going to point out that Fast Money covers the same old tired topics Cash Money releases have beaten to death for nearly a decade and a half. Yes, thugging, big pimping, spitting bravado, and boasting about the quality of Cash Money women and weed are all over Birdman's sophomore release, but Cash Money's CEO shows that his pimp hand is strong, giving his entire roster the Dirty South blueprint for a perfect weekend album. As a rapper, Bryan Williams (or Baby, now almost always Birdman) has always been a P. Diddy character, serviceable with the rhymes but a better boss and impresario. Here, he's a step up from on fire, keeping it simple as expected but always driven and cocksure. What's fascinating is that he's also ready for your ire, begging haters to bring it on. Using the "N" word as much as possible, dragging out every old cliché, and sticking the album's two weed songs right next to each other gives every snooty backpacker plenty of ammo and every opportunity to look like a chump in 2015 when Fast Money is ...

$17.69 Marcy Priest has an incredible voice and is one of my favorite singers. She is one of those people who I could listen to if they just sang names out of the phone book.First, the expected. I have heard Marcy perform several songs that she has written before. They are usually slow and very powerful vocally. That's what I expected on "Awake" and there are a few songs like ...
