| | Don Stiernberg Unseasonably Cool CD Don Stiernberg Discography of CDs
More straight ahead acoustic jazz from virtuoso mandolinist Don Stiernberg. In an acoustic ensemble setting (guitar, bass, drums), he proves once again that the mandolin is a force to be reconed with in the jazz idiom. Don's lyric phrasing and textural chord progressions speak volumes about his mastery --- not merely of his chosen instrument, but also of the great American songbook.Guitarist Curt Morrison shares some of the limelight in this recording. His hip, edgy approach brightens the selections, while at the same time providing a solid, tasteful backdrop for Don's flights of fancy on the mandolin.Don and Curt love playful musical interaction. As one finishes a solo, the other will often echo part of it in tribute. That interplay is extended by several of Chicago's jazz most dazzling jazz musicians, including Art Davis (trumpet, flugelhorn), Ron DeWar and Richie Fudoli (tenor saxophones), Russ Phillips (trombone), Alejo Poveda and Geraldo de Oliveira (percussion), and Greg "Spats" Studebaker (cornet). | | Enrico Rava Tati CD (2005)
Unseasonably Cool
$14.99 Personnel: Enrico Rava (trumpet); Enrico Rava; Stefano Bollani (piano); Paul Motian (drums). Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (11/2004). Photographer: Robert "RX Lord" Lewis. Enrico Rava's restrained trumpet playing has been regarded in modern times as perfectly reflective of the ECM sound. It is wrapped in European classical music while displaying a lyricism that goes beyond strict tonality, reaching for a soulful arena that only he can claim in the post-Miles Davis era. The emerging pianist Stefano Bollani joins Rava and veteran drummer Paul Motian for this contrabass-less trio that uses a downplayed sonic footprint, at times ethereal, but mostly calmed, collected, and serenely furnished. The compositions are mainly Rava's in hushed tones, but occasionally a modern progressive, bop-influenced, or energetic presence creeps in. Bollani's style is romantically ...
