| | Don Stiernberg & John Carlini Angel Eyes CD Don Stiernberg & John Carlini Discography of CDs
Laid back jazz standards done in an elegant, acoustic ensemble setting. That's what you get with "Angel Eyes." Master mandolinist Don Stiernberg and journeyman guitarist John Carlini are the perfect team to present these classic tunes with style, grace and melodic counterpoint. Against a rich rhythmic texture woven by bassist Jim Cox and drummer Phil Gratteau, Don and John breathe new life into these jazz gems. With skillful improvisation and a few tempo and key changes, these quintessential studio titans create a tasteful, colorful tapestry of music that sounds as if the entire project was the result of meticulous planning. It wasn't. The "cats" discussed each arrangement, did a trial take to get their bearings, then played their hearts out. The result is pure studio magic. This is the perfect recording for a romantic evening in front of the fireplace. It's hip, it's mellow, and it's romantic. So pour yourself a glass of wine, relax, and let "Angel Eyes" transport you to another time and place ---one you'll want to visit over and over again. | | Miles Davis Quintet/Sextet CD (1955)
Angel Eyes
$9.19 Recorded in the summer of 1955, this session was a half-year after the famed meeting of Davis & Jackson with Thelonious Monk on Christmas Eve 1954. The special chemistry of Miles & Milt is further enhanced on the 2 numbers written by Jackie McLean where the composer's alto saxophone makes the group a sextet. Ray Bryant, in his introduction to a wider jazz audience, is also represented by one tune. The second number is Thad Jones. OJC/Fantasy Records.
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Ray Bryant (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on August 5, 1955. Originally released on Prestige (7034). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler and Martin Williams. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1982, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Ray Bryant (piano); Art Taylor (drums). Liner Note Authors: Ira Gitler; Martin Williams ; William Martin. Recording information: Hackensack, NJ (08/05/1955). Most of Miles Davis' Prestige recordings (all of which are currently available in the Original Jazz Classics series) have also been reissued by the audiophile CD label DCC Jazz. This is one of the trumpeter's lesser-known sets, an outing with friends: the up-and-coming pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Percy Heath, drummer Art Taylor, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and (on two of the four songs) altoist Jackie McLean. The brevity of the program (only a touch over 30 minutes) keeps this enjoyable outing from being too essential. [Originally released in 1955, Miles Davis and Milt Jackson Quintet/Sextet was reissued on CD in 2005.] ~ Scott Yanow One of the most obscure of his Prestige recordings, this CD only contains a half-hour of music but the quality is fairly high. Davis is heard outside of his regular group, playing with vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist Ray Bryant (who was left out of the personnel listing), bassist Percy Heath, drummer Art Taylor and, on two of the four numbers, altoist Jackie McLean. This set (formerly known as Miles Davis and Milt Jackson) is highlighted by "Dr. Jackle" and "Minor March." ~ Scott ...
| | Fall I Am Kurious Oranj CD (1988)
Angel Eyes
$10.39 The Fall: Mark E. Smith (vocals); Brix Smith (guitar, background vocals); Craig Scanlon (acoustic & electric guitars); Marcia Schofield (keyboards); Steve Hanley (bass); Simon Wolstencroft (drums). The last thing most Fall fans expected the group to do in 1988 was provide music for a ballet, but in fact this is what they did. Of course, it helped that the Michael Clark company of dancers were some of the most avant-garde at the time in Britain and were inspired originally by the Fall's "Hey! Luciani" single. The concept, very loosely, centers around William and Mary of Orange, and finds Smith arranging William Blake's "Jerusalem" for the band, adding his own lyrics ("It was the fault ...

| | Red Mitchell Hear Ye! Hear Ye! CD (1961)
Angel Eyes
$9.95 Full performer name: Red Mitchell/Harold Land Quintet. Red Mitchell/Harold Land Quintet: Red Mitchell (bass); Harold Land (tenor saxophone); Carmell Jones (trumpet); Frank Strazzeri (piano); Leon Petties (drums). Producers: Nesuhi Ertegun, Bones Howe. Reissue producers: Donald Elfman, Naomi Yoshii. Originally released on Atlantic (1376). Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather. Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York). Personnel: Itzhak Perlman (violin); Anre Previn (piano); Jim Hall (guitar); Red Mitchell (bass); Shelly Manne (drums). In the early '60s, bassist Red Mitchell and tenor saxophonist Harold Land co-led a quintet in Los Angeles. The group did not catch on but they did record one Atlantic set that has been reissued on CD. In addition to the co-leaders, the quintet included trumpeter Carmell Jones, pianist Frank Strazzeri, and drummer Leon Pettis, and, although their original program of six songs was comprised entirely of group originals, the music falls easily into the hard bop area with plenty of fine solos and swinging ensembles. The CD reissue adds two previously unreleased tracks including a lone standard, "I'm Old Fashioned." This is a fine effort from a group that deserved greater recognition at the time. ~ Scott Yanow This ...
