First time on CD for the first two albums from Sheffield's Berry. These albums from the mid-sixties featuring Jimmy page are remastered & slipcased with informative sleevenotes. BGO. 2004.

2 LPs on 1 CD: DAVE BERRY (1964)/ONE DOZEN BERRYS (1966).
Liner Note Authors: John Firminger; Mike Smith .
Arranger: Richard Guest.
This CD is a wonderful surprise from Beat Goes On. Not that Dave Berry didn't deserve the reissue of his first two albums, but neither Dave Berry nor its follow-up, One Dozen Berrys, was remotely the best album -- or even among the better albums -- to come out of the mid-'60s British beat boom. Berry's heart was in the right place when it came to R&B and rock & roll, and he had a voice, but as a stylist he was at a disadvantage to rivals such as Chris Farlowe and Zoot Money. Still, he had some good instincts (when he followed them) and a strangely compelling sound, courtesy of producer Mike Smith and an array of musicians who, in addition to Frank Miles from his own band the Cruisers, included Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan. The mix of country and pop sounds juxtaposed with serious R&B (including the killer "I Love You Babe" and the wrenchingly compelling "Baby, It's You") may be off-putting, but that diversity is more a sign of the times in which these two albums were made than any indication of weakness in the execution -- truth is, the diversity of sounds here calls up flashes of the Beatles, even if Berry doesn't make the switch in genres as smoothly as the Liverpool quartet did. Even the presence of ballads such as "The Girl from the Fair Isle" isn't a disadvantage -- Paul McCartney was putting the same kind of material onto the Beatles' albums by way of Meredith Willson songs -- and followed by the searing blues-rocker "Go On Home," it's not a bad showcase for Berry's range. Ultimately, "Go On Home" must be considered one of the cuts that makes this CD worth every cent, and the ballad is an unexpected bonus. Even the next number, a rhythm guitar-driven slow ballad called "Everybody Tries," is a perfect little beat-era soft rocker of the kind that the Roulettes or any number of serious bands did on their albums. The notes by John Firminger stay very close to the two albums at hand and their production. The sound is excellent, and considering what the original vinyl versions of either of these albums would cost today, the CD is a bargain. ~ Bruce Eder

5 stars Long overdue album
Being a big Dave Berry fan, I was so glad to get this release on cd. I have all his albums on vinyl and he will always be the greatest. The music is typical mid 60's, which I love. Anyone who loves r&b will love this album.

This remastered collection features 56 tracks from the classic band, including their three British number one hits.
This reviewer is usually loathe to give compilation albums the highest rating, as they have an unfair advantage over original albums; and it's not as though there aren't already good multi-CD sets on the Searchers, including their 30th Anniversary Collection from Sequel Records. But this two-disc, 56-song collection goes into territory where the early triple-disc set never ventured as the first Searchers compilation to encompass not only their most familiar work on Pye Records, but also Phonogram, RCA, Sire, PRT, and Coconut Records. It also avails itself of the vast expansion of the band's tape library in recent decades, including demos and live tracks, all in state-of-the-art ...

The second album since Mudhoney's 21st-century revitalization and return to its origins at the venerable Sub Pop label, 2006's UNDER A BILLION SUNS finds the Seattle grunge veterans building on its predecessor, SINCE WE'VE BECOME TRANSLUCENT. On this formidable 11-track set, frontman Mark Arm and company once again bring out the horn section for a few numbers (opener "Where Is the Future," the raucous closer "Blindspots"), and, more importantly, pound the distortion pedals and toms like it's 1989, particularly with the lurching "On the Move" and "Hard-On for War," essentially a sludgy update of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Anyone doubting that Mudhoney still packs a serious sonic punch will be happily knocked out by this excellent outing.
Did anyone ever attribute much of a social conscience to Mudhoney back in the day when they were "The Guys Who Built Grunge"? All these years later, their outrage at the state of the world around them has finally reared its head on their seventh studio album, Under ...

Singularity CD Mae: Dave Elkins, Zach Gehring (guitar); Rob Sweitzer (Hammond b-3 organ); Mark Padgett (bass guitar); Jacob Marshall (drums).
The third album from indie rock outfit Mae continues the band's evolution toward ambitious, emo-influenced rock on a grand scale. Like its predecessor THE EVERGLOW, SINGULARITY blends surging guitar and keys with intriguing song structures and accessible melodies. SINGULARITY is more focused than Mae's first two albums, in large part because the band rocks with abandon, churning ...
