Although perhaps more progressive than metal, this album still seems to fit fairly well into the prog metal genre. The musicianship and song writing on the CD are quite accomplished. Elements of many textures seem to pervade, including the occasional Yes or UK influence. However, the predominant tones are Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Rush. The drum work, in particular, is quite Rush inspired. The vocal stylings are very original and strong. One highlight of the disc is a guitar interplay section between Douglas Ott and guest player Steve Rothery of Marillion. Enchant is the aforementioned Ott, Ted Leonard, Michael Geimer, Paul Craddick, and Ed Platt. ~ Gary Hill

Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. A peculiar but rewarding side project for Scottish folk singer/songwriter Jackie Leven, Songs for Lonely Americans puts Leven's sturdy folk-rock tunes into a modern electronic context. Leven's rich and thickly accented vocals and powerful acoustic guitar are at the center of the songs just as they are on his solo albums, but co-producer David Wrench puts ambient keyboard drones, downtempo drum machines and even a little hip-hop turntablism into the mix as well. The overall effect, a cross between Dick Gaughan and Portishead, works surprisingly well, especially on those songs where the keyboards and effects are used sparingly, to color the songs rather than to overpower them.
