He's known to many as an inoffensive pop balladeer, but at the arguable peak of his career in the late '70s, Billy Joel released his darkest, most emotionally charged album. THE STRANGER abandons the grandstanding and broad melodic sweep of Joel's earlier records for a more intimate, introspective sound, effectively communicating Joel's ruminations on the perils of life and love. "Movin' Out" is something of an existentialist anthem, chronicling the way people's dreams are often irreparably crushed. The ominous-sounding title tune examines the many guises with which lovers disguise themselves in their attempts to entrap and deceive each other. "Only the Good Die Young" is hedonism at it's most iconoclastic. Even "She's Always a Woman," ostensibly a romantic piano ballad, is full of thorny, less-than-complimentary observations about its subject. Joel's emotional honesty would never be this clear-eyed and unabashed again.
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2008.

This box set was digitally remixed and remastered by Bill Levenson and Steve Rinkoff at The Power Station, New York from May to June 1990. Includes a 16-page booklet with session notes, annotations and an essay by Gene Santoro.
By digitally remixing and remastering these sessions, the producers have resurrected one of Eric Clapton's greatest achievements, his instrumental and songwriting peak. Musically, Clapton was inspired by his new rhythm section and challenged by fellow guitar hero Duane Allman, whose torrid slide guitar makes blues-blasts like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "Key To The Highway" so compelling. And from the classic title song (with drummer Jim Gordon's famous piano coda), to rivetting performances of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" each and every metaphor is etched in blood and longing, framed in wailing guitars.
Disc 1 is the legendary LAYLA double-LP. The jams which comprise disc 2 illustrate the evolution of the session, while the alternate masters, jams and outtakes on disc 3 will certainly be of interest to casual fans and completists alike. All in all, few rock albums from this era have the staying power and poetic immediacy of LAYLA.

It goes without saying that a five-CD box set of the Fall live in one of their tumultuous eras is for the hardcore only. The set contains three shows from April 2001 and two from November 2001. The sound quality goes from flat soundboard recordings to a handheld somewhere in the rowdier part of some acoustically poor venue. A good portion of the songs appear once on each CD, some of the versions are downright sloppy, and the Fall would become consistently brilliant again a year later. In other words, if you only own 20 Fall CDs, make sure this isn't one of them. That said, it does give the legion of Fall fans a good view of how the band handled the transition from the triumphant The Unutterable to the less than satisfactory Are You Are Missing Winner and back to the energetic 2003 world tour. Mark E. Smith has done this before, flooding the market with enough of the bad Fall so the old band's essence is wiped away and the new one can rise like the phoenix reborn. You can argue till the end of time what's more worthy than what, and fans who have shelled out hard-earned cash for the band's huge discography have a pretty good guess what it sounds like (and they already ...
