| | Billy Joel Stranger CD Billy Joel Discography of CDs
He's known to many as an inoffensive pop balladeer, but at the arguable peak of his career in the late '70s, Billy Joel released his darkest, most emotionally charged album. THE STRANGER abandons the grandstanding and broad melodic sweep of Joel's earlier records for a more intimate, introspective sound, effectively communicating Joel's ruminations on the perils of life and love. "Movin' Out" is something of an existentialist anthem, chronicling the way people's dreams are often irreparably crushed. The ominous-sounding title tune examines the many guises with which lovers disguise themselves in their attempts to entrap and deceive each other. "Only the Good Die Young" is hedonism at it's most iconoclastic. Even "She's Always a Woman," ostensibly a romantic piano ballad, is full of thorny, less-than-complimentary observations about its subject. Joel's emotional honesty would never be this clear-eyed and unabashed again.
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2008.

Rolling Stone (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]here's impressive variety here: contemplative ballads...and impressionistic epics....Joel's melodic genius invites comparisons to Paul McCartney..." Rolling Stone (12/11/03, p.113) - Ranked #67 in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums Of All Time" - "...The real pleasure here is the specificity of the lyrics in the rock songs located in New York..." Q (Magazine) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "After four albums yielded only minor-league status, Billy JOel penned the most durable songs of his career....He was at the top of his game here." Blender (Magazine) (p.93) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "A record where saxophones trump guitars and the piano is nearly the cradle of civilization, THE STRANGER cut against any number of grains in the era just after disco and punk had broken out..." Stranger CD music
$16.39 The Doobie's biggest commercial success coincided with Michael McDonald's emergence as the leader of the band. His brilliant brand of sophisticated, keyboard-driven pop soul, as exemplified by the title track and the huge hit "What a Fool Believes," was instantly identifiable and almost impossible to resist. There are tracks here that look back to the Doobie's earlier days as a biker ...

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers met their artistic peak with the powerful A NIGHT IN TUNISIA. This incarnation of the group included Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons and Jymie Merritt with their leader Blakey. As the Messengers entered their most fruitful period for Blue Note, Blakey drove his men relentlessly with powerful grooves, heavy swinging and shouts of encouragement. This session documents the full power of his assertive leadership and the masterful playing of his sidemen, each rising to legendary ...
| | Herb Alpert Going Places CD (1965) Remastered; Special Edition
Stranger album
$9.99 Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were rolling right down the middle of the American pop scene like a locomotive in 1966 -- and this album captures them at the peak of their exuberance. By now, there really was a live, touring edition of the Tijuana Brass, and there was an easily identifiable TJB sound, with its strummed Latin American guitars, twin trumpet leads, delicate marimba or vibes (played ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Stranger CD music
$16.65 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed ...

Stranger songs
$10.49 This box set was digitally remixed and remastered by Bill Levenson and Steve Rinkoff at The Power Station, New York from May to June 1990. Includes a 16-page booklet with session notes, annotations and an essay by Gene Santoro.
By digitally remixing and remastering these sessions, the producers have resurrected one of Eric Clapton's greatest achievements, his instrumental and songwriting peak. Musically, Clapton was inspired by his new rhythm section and challenged by fellow guitar hero Duane Allman, whose torrid slide guitar makes blues-blasts like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "Key To The Highway" so compelling. And from the classic title song (with drummer Jim Gordon's famous piano coda), to rivetting performances of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," "Have You Ever Loved A Woman," and Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" each and every metaphor is etched in blood and longing, framed in wailing guitars.
Disc 1 is the legendary LAYLA double-LP. The jams which comprise disc 2 illustrate the evolution of the session, while the alternate masters, jams and outtakes on disc 3 will certainly be of interest to casual fans and completists alike. All in all, few rock albums from this era have the staying power and poetic immediacy of LAYLA.
In the years after Cream disbanded and his collaboration with Steve Winwood in Blind Faith had sunk, Eric Clapton teamed with keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, drummer Jim Gordon, bassist Carl Radle, and guitarist Duane Allman under the name Derek & the Dominos to write and record some new material. The result was this 1970 masterpiece. Shot through with a passion informed by the tumultuous nature of Clapton's own life and career at the time, LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS plays like a primer for classic rock, with incendiary dueling guitars, swirling organ, blues-styled vocals, and punchy bass and drums.
Covers of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" and Hendrix's "Little Wing" are given fresh interpretations, ...

| | Fall Touch Sensitive: Bootleg Box Set CDs (2003)
Stranger music CDs
$36.95 It goes without saying that a five-CD box set of the Fall live in one of their tumultuous eras is for the hardcore only. The set contains three shows from April 2001 and two from November 2001. The sound quality goes from flat soundboard recordings to a handheld somewhere in the rowdier part of some acoustically poor venue. A good portion of the songs appear once on each CD, some of the versions are downright sloppy, and the Fall would become consistently brilliant again a year later. In other words, if you only own 20 Fall CDs, make sure this isn't one of them. That said, it does give the legion of Fall fans a good view of how the band handled the transition from the triumphant The Unutterable to the less than satisfactory Are You Are Missing Winner and back to the energetic 2003 world tour. Mark E. Smith has done this before, flooding the market with enough of the bad Fall so the old band's essence is wiped away and the new one can rise like the phoenix reborn. You can argue till the end of time what's more worthy than what, and fans who have shelled out hard-earned cash for the band's huge discography have a pretty good guess what it sounds like (and they already ...
