Sophie Milman's debut self-titled CD is a collection of Jazz standards and contemporary new compositions that together showcase the maturity and originality of this young Jazz singer, skillfully produced by Canadian Jazz patriarch Bill King, and Danny Greenspoon, and features some of the best Canadian jazz players in the business. The album has sold close to 100,000 copies worldwide and received the attention of fans and critics alike including reaching #1 on Jazz iTunes charts in Canada, United States, Japan, France, Sweden. Following the release of her debut album, Sophie Milman received a Juno nomination for Vocal Jazz album of the Year in 2006, as well as selling out venue after venue on her first tour. Since then, Sophie Milman has toured countless dates and recently released her sophomore album 'Make Someone Happy'. This album has hit #1 on the Jazz iTunes charts in Canada, United States and Japan, as well as reaching #4 on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

Sophie Milman's debut release reveals a gifted young jazz vocalist who swings with a surprising degree of maturity. Though born in Russia, she has called Canada home for some time and is joined by some of the country's best jazz musicians. Milman isn't afraid to take a few chances and seems to be quite comfortable with her own voice rather than copying others, as young performers have a tendency to do. Her upbeat treatment of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby" is full of spirit, while she's clearly having fun in the somewhat campy 1960s-flavored arrangement of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Pianist Bill King (who is also one of Milman's two producers for this project) provides superb accompaniment to the singer in "I Feel Pretty," which evolves from its original setting into a lively bop setting featuring saxophonist Pat La Barbera. Among the newer compositions, Milman excels in her interpretation of the breezy "Lonely in New York'" (briefly showcasing guitarist Reg Schwager and violinist Lenny Solomon), though the bland pop song "Back Home to Me" sounds like something taken from a Norah Jones CD. Sophie Milman clearly has the ability to turn heads in the jazz world; all she needs is the opportunity to be heard. ~ Ken Dryden

Personnel: Sophie Milman (vocals); John Sheard, Bill King (piano); Marc Rogers (upright bass); Davide Direnzo (drums); Alan Hetherington (percussion).

Q (p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he woman sings sublimely, and she does sultry with impeccable, classy...style."
JazzTimes (p.138) - "What Milman lacks in Krall polish she gallantly attempts to make up for with throaty, Marilyn Monroe-esque sauciness. Such smoked sexiness is well suited to the likes of 'My Baby Just Cares for Me'...and 'I Feel Pretty.'"

1 star not diana krall
i thought that this jazz work would be more along the lines of diana krall but not so! she is more of a show tunes jazz artist. i have only listened once and plan to give it away!

5 stars You're right, She's not Diana Krall
I read the previous review which labeled Sophie Milman as a "Show Tunes" artist. I completely disagree. Sophie sings traditional jazz, reminiscent of Bille Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. She does not fall into the new bastardized definition of jazz. I personally I would consider artists Diana Krall and Nora Jones to be adult contemporary. Sophies voice is smokey, sexy and mature for a woman of just 21 years old. She also sings beautifully in French and Russian as well as English. I highly recommend this album.

Let's Talk Business
Dee Daniels Let's Talk Business CD  (1994)

Sophie Milman songs
CD $12.95
A passionate blues singer who is greatly influenced by jazz as well as gospel, Dee Daniels doesn't hesitate to wail and let it rip on Let's Talk Business. This rewarding CD finds Daniels enjoying the solid jazz backing of pianist Larry Fuller and the leaders of the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra -- Jeff Clayton (sax), brother John Clayton (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums) -- and their sense of spontaneity is a definite asset on everything from Lou Herman's familiar "The Right Time" and Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone To Love" to Daniels' own "Let Me Love You Tonight." One of the album's most enjoyable surprises is Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me To Do" -- while Reed had a laidback, relaxed vocal style, the big-voiced, emotional Daniels digs into the song in a very aggressive way. This obscure, little-known release is definitely worth trying to find. ~ Alex Henderson DEE DANIELS' BIOGRAPHYDee Daniels offers the jazz aficionado an ultimate treat - jazz served up with full-bodied silky tones that soar to the height and captures the depth of her four-octave range. She has a warm presence and performance ability in everything from fronting combos in intimate Jazz clubs, to fronting big bands or symphony orchestras in concert halls. When she accompanies herself on piano with exceptional ease and artistry, it is to the great enjoyment of her audiences.

Daniels' style was born in her stepfather's church choir in Oakland, California, honed through the R&B era and brought to full fruition during a five-year stay in Europe from 1982 to 1987. During those years, she had many wonderful opportunities to perform with such 'Legends of Jazz' as Toots Theilemans, Johnny Griffin, Ed Thigpen, and Monty Alexander to name but a few. Two other personal highlights while in Europe include having had the opportunity of singing the Blues with the late, divine Sarah Vaughan in The Netherlands, and singing Gospel with the late great Joe Williams in Germany.

Dee's international career includes performances in eleven African countries, Australia, Hong Kong and Japan, as well as in North America and several countries throughout Europe. She has cultivated a diverse career that has seen her on the theater ...

In January 2008, she returned to the U.S. and appeared with the Richmond Symphony. These are only the most recent triumphs for Ms. Clark. Her standing-room-only performance at the 2006 Cape May Jazz Festival drew raves from JazzTimes: "Clark not only conjures up memories of the Divine Sarah [Vaughan]; she does them justice. I never thought I'd hear a singer with the range, musicality and command of tone and timbre that was Sarah at her best, but now I have."When Ms. Clark released her debut ...
