| | Charles Mingus Young Rebel CD - Import Charles Mingus Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This 4CD set is a collection that shows the roots of the development of one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. Tracing his career as a sideman and bandleader with such greats as Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo and Earl Hines. 40 page booklet and full discography included. Proper. 2004
First off, Proper has issued two recordings by Charles Mingus under the title Young Rebel: this four-disc box set and a single disc, subtitled Pacific Coast Blues. The single disc is a nice slice for anyone looking for a basic, pre-bandleader Mingus set, to hear the roots of his bass playing, arranging, and even writing skills. This collection, however, gives the whole story. These four discs are jammed with 89 tracks that feature the great bassist and composer in a variety of settings from playing bass in bands such as the jump swing outfit of Illinois Jacquet (which no doubt had a huge influence on the R&B and gospel roots in many of his later compositions), Red Norvo, Earl "Fatha" Hines, and, of course, Lionel Hampton. Some cuts are set out as solo showcases; others are straight swing-jump blues, and, of course, others are hard-driving bebop. The musicians featured here range from Kai Winding to Paul Bley, from Dodo Mamaroso and Russ Freeman to Wes Montgomery, from Buddy Collette and Bill Doggett to Tal Farlow and Eric Dolphy, from Miles Davis to Duke Jordan. The basic thing with this set is that it's for the hardcore fan who wants everything and needs to trace the origin and development of the music's icons and innovators. The sound quality varies, but is generally good, and the price -- under 30 dollars -- is most definitely right. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Young Rebel
$9.45 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights ...

| | Fats Waller Handful Of Keys CDs (1999) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Young Rebel
$22.05 A HANDFUL OF KEYS features previously unreleased live radio transcriptions originally broadcast in 1938.
Recorded live at NBC Studios and The Yacht Club, New York, New York in 1938. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald.
As a label, the U.K.'s Proper does a pretty decent job of assembling a great cross-section of tracks, decent sound, and fairly annotated notes (though labels names seldom if ever appear either in liner notes or in track notations, only catalog number...hmmmm) all for a really great price. Hardcore fans of most artists will either have most or all of the material in their boxes, but those curious enough to look deeper into an artist than a single- or double-disc hits package will want to investigate Proper's catalog. This set of Fats Waller material covers the years 1922 -1943, virtually his entire professional career. Each disc has its own title and runs basically chronologically, from his solo work through his many ensembles. ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Young Rebel
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging ...
| | Glenn Miller G.I.'s In Paris 1945 CD (1998)
Young Rebel
$16.25 Luck sometimes manifests itself in the most unexpected places at the most extraordinary times. This is the most unusual body of recordings ever to come out of the orbit of Glenn Miller -- uniquely, real small-group style jazz by members of his band without any traces of the "sweet" band influence of their parent group. That said, none of the music here, or this combination of musicians, likely would have happened if Miller had not died when he did. Following his disappearance over the English Channel in December of 1944, the Army Air Force Band that he'd organized was sent over to France under the temporary command of a very unpopular lieutenant, who reacted to criticism of him in a letter by one disaffected member of the band by demoting the author and two colleagues; the demotion, in turn, led to a financial crunch for the men involved, who cut these sides at a series of recording sessions at a club in Paris, all to earn a little extra money and make up for the loss of pay accompanying the demotions. That was how saxman Peanuts Hucko, pianist Mel Powell, trumpet player Bernie Priven, bassist Joe Schulman, and drummer Ray McKinley came to record these sides with Django Reinhardt on guitar in the winter and spring of 1945. And what sides; from the hot opening rendition of "How High the Moon," featuring a killer trumpet solo by Priven, through the, well, stomping version of "Stompin' ...
