| | Rick Braun Full Stride CD (1998)
Classicos music CDs
$8.85 A positive, tongue-in-cheek attitude infuses the trumpeter's Full Stride with a certain balmy optimism that contrasts with the dark moods of most of 1997's Body and Soul -- and recalls the deeply grooving, party time atmosphere on his breakthrough Beat Street (1995). His relaxed, fun-seeking attitude is apparent from the start, with the catchy light funk of "A Very Good Thing" recalling the restless spirit of Beat Street's "Marty's Party"; he floats a percussive melody, complete with irresistible pop hooks, over his own tropical vibe harmony (on synth) and Dave Palmer's alternating deep drum groove and insistent high-hat. More Herb Alpert than Miles. Likewise, he teams with keyboardist Brian Culbertson and former Rufus guitarist Tony Maiden (who backs Braun's flügelhorn with an hypnotic clicking wah-wah effect throughout) to reflect the fast-paced street life of "Hollywood and Vine." On "One Love," he combines his muted trumpet with Culbertson's acoustic piano as a harmonic backdrop to a dreamy, swaying flügelhorn melody; the effect is a cool tension beneath a soaring spirit. "China Bath" plays like background music at an Asian massage parlor. Chuck Kentis finds a synth tone that approximates an Oriental stringed instrument, which he touches gracefully behind a gentle conversation by Braun and Peter ...

| | Vishwa Mohan Bhatt Indian Delta CD (2002)
Classicos album
$22.79 Vishwa Mohan Bhatt created a stir when Western audiences first heard his Mohan Veenaa, a hybrid instrument he invented that is a 19-string modified archtop guitar with three melody strings, four drone strings, and 12 sympathetic strings. It crosses the tonal and harmonic capabilities of a Hawaiian guitar with indigenous, traditional string instruments the sitar, the sarangi, and of course, the veena. This CD was recorded live in duet with tabla master Sandeep Das at the 2001 Satpak Festival, a week-long celebration of East Indian culture. The three ragas here all have their roots in folk music, and are recorded in three different rhythms. First there is the multi-tiered "Raag Puriya Dhanashri" in the alap, where the progression moves from very slow to mid-tempo to fast with the melody being supplanted by extended improvisations on its various themes. The final two ragas are actually the same, played at varying tempos in the tintaal rhythm. The first is a languid, mid-tempo which burns where notes and drones work in concert rather than juxtaposition, and the second part of "Raag Sahyam Kalyan" is very fast with the slide in Bhatt's left hand moving through various structural variations on the tune's melody, evoking the very spirit of the Delta blues with the drone strings and the turnaround patterns. The entire proceeding moves from dreamlike languor to intense musical focus and even revelation, as Bhatt consciously puts the two cultures side by side and then weaves them through one another, creating something entirely new in the process. ~ Thom Jurek
The absorption of elements from music cultures outside the Indian sub-continent has been a significant feature in the evolution of North Indian Classical Music. Most of the popular instruments used in North India today including Sitar and Santoor, have their roots in Persia and the Middle East. The modern Sarod owes its existence to the Afghan Rebab. Experimentation and innovation continues to be part of the tradition, as modern musicians endeavour to search for new ways of exploring an ancient music system that is flexible enough to absorb and accept external influences. Ravi Shankar opened up the dialogue between eastern and western music traditions in the 1960's. He laid the foundations for other innovators who discovered new sounds to reflect the distinctive colours, moods and nuances of Indian classical music. The guitar is the latest addition to the repertory of Indian music instruments. This relatively simple six-stringed ...
