| | Mahavishnu Project Phase 2 CD Mahavishnu Project Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
The Mahavishnu Project: Pete McCann (guitar); Rob Thomas (violin); Steve Hunt (keyboards); Stephan Crump (bass guitar); Gregg Bendian (drums). Recorded along the group's 2003 U.S. tour, this double-CD set is the better of two extant CDs by the Mahavishnu Orchestra tribute group, assembled by drummer Gregg Bendian and featuring Pete McCann on guitar, Steve Hunt on keyboards, Stephan Crump on bass, and Rob Thomas on violin. The recording quality is superior to that of their earlier Live Bootleg and the repertoire cuts even more broadly across that of the original group. They also add one composition credited to Bendian to the array of John McLaughlin-credited material. ~ Bruce EderRolling Stone (p.64) - "[An] exciting document of inspiration and exploration..." Down Beat (p.88) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[T]he ensemble generates a laudable reincarnation of the orchestra's original makeover including components that are akin to a heavy aerial bombardment." Phase 2
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy ...

| | Dave Brubeck So What's New? CD (1998)
Phase 2
$15.65 W/Bobby Militello,Jack Six, Randy Jones;11 New Tunes,1 Old
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Dave Brubeck (piano); Bobby Militello (alto saxophone, flute); Jack Six (bass); Randy Jones (drums). Recorded at Ambient Recording Studio, Stamford, Connecticut on September 3 & 4, 1997. Includes liner notes by Doug Ramsey. This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system. At 77, Dave Brubeck continued to pour forth new music at a clip that was extraordinary even for him. Whether any of it will last or stand up to the famous Brubeck numbers of the past, though, is something to ponder when you sample this quartet session. An all-Brubeck program of never-recorded new pieces (although the piece entitled "Marian McPartland" beat the McPartland/Brubeck duo version by only a couple of months), So What's New finds Brubeck in a friskier mood than in his previous, somewhat autumnal Telarcs, even willing to take us back to the bombs-away block-chorded Brubeck of the '50s and '60s on "It's Deja-Vu All Over Again." As an improvising pianist, he continues to be on his toes, sometimes falling back upon patented devices like those wide-screen moving tremolos, yet always finding interesting paths to develop. Yet while the Brubeck composition style and taste are felt throughout, very few of his themes or conceptions stay in the mind; the McPartland tune and another fine jazz waltz, "Waltzing," are notable exceptions. Bobby Militello's alto work is, as a whole, fairly generic, although he has some thrusting, aggressive moments, and Jack Six and Randy Jones continue to build a solid rhythmic foundation. Though not his best, So What's New is ample ...
| | Fela Kuti Fela Ransome Kuti With Ginger Baker Live CD (1971)
Phase 2
$17.45 Live! was recorded in 1971 with Fela's group at the time, the Africa 70. Due to its demanding performance schedule, the band is remarkably tight. Interlocking rhythms drive keyboard and guitar vamps, propelling instrumental soloists on trumpet and saxophone. There's a nice jazzy feel here, manifested both in an elastic sense of time and in an ensemble approach to performance. Improvised passages lie interspersed between statements of the theme, with Fela improvising on voice or delivering some rather frank lyrics in English and Yoruba. For example, the message of the opener: Let's get it on! (This piece features Ginger Baker sitting in for Tony Allen on drums, and he does quite well. Baker trades his usual heavy-handed approach for a lighter touch, dancing in and around the beat.) Universal.
Personnel includes: Fela Kuti (vocals); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums); Peter Animashaun (guitar); Igo Chiko (tenor saxophone); Lekan Animashaun (baritone saxophone); Tunde Williams, Eddie Faychum (trumpet); Maurice Epko (bass); Tony Allen (drums); Henry Koffi, Friday Jumbo, Akwesi Korranting (congas); Tony Abayomi, Isaac Olaleye (percussion). Includes liner notes by Jacqueline Grandchamp-Thiam & Rikki Stein. Digitally remastered by Pompon (Translab, Paris, France). Full performer name: Fela Ransome Kuti & Africa '70/Ginger Baker. Personnel: Fela Kuti (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Igo Chiko (tenor saxophone); Lekan Animashaun (baritone saxophone); Tunde Williams (trumpet); Maurice Ekpo (bass guitar); Tony Allen (drums); Friday Jumbo, Akwesi Korranting (congas); Isaac Olaleye (shekere). It's hard to go wrong with Fela Kuti's work from the 1970s, and LIVE!, which features the Afrobeat innovator backed ...
