| | Solvent City CD Solvent Discography of CDs
Synth pop and good-time fun, or at least that's what comes to mind immediately with Solvent's dancey homage to '80s kitsch, Solvent City. While Solvent's Solvent City isn't going to knock your socks off with its critical work on the periphery of dance music, it will do more than that and make you smile. After hearing so much of the serious dance music that's out there being intellectualized and eulogized, it's nice to have a disc that's both fun and happy. There's no end-time message or credo to the technologically ruled world here, just fun and exciting beats and '80s synth timbres. Solvent's Solvent City is a lighthearted and jovial disc that seems more like the soundtrack to an '80s Molly Ringwald movie than a 2001-released disc coming off the German label Morr Music. Solvent's Solvent City is a lot like Daft Punk's Discovery with its tribute to '80s kitsch. This is a fantastic recording and one that no synthesizer-fiend or lover of great music should be without. A fantastic disc and great work. ~ Matt Borghi

| | DJ Shadow Outsider CD (2006)
Solvent City CD music
$12.59 Longtime DJ Shadow fans tend to display a rabid devotion to his often arcane, decidedly DIY production methods. Now the stuff of legend, Shadow's debut, ENTRODUCING, was famously constructed from nothing more than a sampling drum machine and musical snippets sourced from obscure thrift-store vinyl. His third album, THE OUTSIDER, marks defiantly ...

| | Loscil Submers CD (2002)
Solvent City CD music
$12.95 Clearly a producer with an unapologetic love for the conceptual, Scott Morgan's second album for Kranky as Loscil takes on an aquatic theme -- each track is named after a submarine. However, not a whole lot has changed in Morgan's approach from his debut. These tracks sound only a little more aqueous than the ones on Triple Point, continuing to carry wide-open spatial qualities, with the odd hint of dub occasionally thrown in for variation (with its lathery suds of dubspace, "Le Plongeur" rivals Rhythm & Sound's best work). The only significant difference is the emphasis on waves of rhythm over thumps and pulses. "Triton" is the most wonderful thing Morgan has produced yet, an elegantly dramatic, filmic composition based on a submerged two-note bass hum, a series of rhythmic noise effects, and what sounds like a sampled and drastically altered orchestral arrangement. The notes are emitted lucidly, but they resemble a string arrangement as heard through some type of mildly muffling filter -- a body of water, perhaps? If the only track on the disc that follows it hadn't ...
| | Rush Exit Stage Left CD (1981) Remastered
Solvent City music CDs
$12.05 Hot on the heels of their most successful album, Rush's 1981 tour was documented and released as EXIT, itself a Top 10 record. The package is an essential purchase for Rush diehards as well as hard rock fans. It makes a fine companion to ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE, as there are no repeated tracks. The two live records combine to make a fine representation of Rush's prime era.
"YYZ" from MOVING PICTURES features Neil Peart's drum solo and shows why he is truly one of rock's premier skin bashers. Fan favorite "Closer to the Heart" gets the crowd participation going while the epic "Jacob's Ladder" is made to be played in an arena setting. "Xanadu" and album closer "La Villa Strangiato" are both mammoth tracks that exceed the studio versions due to the excellent interplay of the band and their growth as musicians. Recorded in the U.K. and Canada, EXIT is a phenomenal live recording that shows the band can interpret their studio material with both feeling and expertise.
Rush was planning on releasing a live album after the Permanent Waves tour, but manager Cliff Burnstein convinced the group that they were peaking musically and should go straight back into the recording studio -- resulting in their finest album, 1981's Moving Pictures. So after the tour wound down, their postponed live album was finally assembled, released as Exit...Stage Left the same year. The album turned out to be the polar opposite of its predecessor, 1976's raw and direct All the World's a Stage; in fact, the performances often sound identical to the recently released studio versions. The contagious energy that helped make All the World's a Stage such a success is muted, replaced by workmanlike renditions that border on the uninspired. There's no denying the high quality of the songs selected -- "Spirit of Radio," "Tom Sawyer," "Xanadu," "The Trees," "Closer to the Heart," "Jacob's Ladder," etc. -- it's just that the performances rarely catch fire. Compared to Rush's three other concert albums (the aforementioned All the World's a Stage, 1988's A Show of Hands, and ...

| | Gras Och Stenar Trad Trad Gras Och Stenar CD (1970) Reissue
Solvent City music CDs
$13.35 Fans of the Scandinavian psychedelic rock connection know that Träd, Gräs och Stenar were the real deal. A wild quartet, prone in concert to spontaneous recorder or Jew's harp ensemble pieces, performance stunts, and extended acid jams, their music recalls the Mothers of Invention as much as Parson Sound -- and even more so on their debut LP from 1970, reissued on CD in 1995. Side one of the original LP was filled by two covers and not just any covers: Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" (yes, not penned by him, but TG&S's rendition clearly stems from his recording of Dylan's song) and the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" -- these Swedish guys had guts. "All Along the Watchtower" is taken at a crawling tempo and turned almost gloomy by the use of a menacing rhythm guitar. The Stones anthem fails to impress vocally, but it opens on a fabulous extended freakout. The track lasts over ten minutes. Side two consists of two original songs and two spontaneous live tracks. Led by two Jew's harps and a violin, "Svarta Pärla" has strong folk overtones and provides the highlight. ...
