The third volume in this very valuable series of two-CD sets contains four half-hour weekly radio shows featuring Eddie Condon's all-star ensembles at Town Hall concerts. Condon (who supplies verbal commentary along with annnouncer Fred Robbins) programmed each show quite skillfully, featuring the large groups of all-stars in logical fashion. This set (which is highly recommended along with the other volumes in the series to followers of traditional jazz) features quite a roster: trumpeters Bobby Hackett, Jonah Jones, Max Kaminsky and Sterling Bose, trombonist Benny Morton, baritonist Ernie Caceres (who is really in peak form throughout the Condon programs), clarinetists Edmond Hall and Pee Wee Russell, guitarists Carl Kress and Tony Mottola, pianist Harry "The Hipster" Gibson (taking a couple of rare solos), Willie "The Lion" Smith, Jess Stacy and Gene Schroeder, bassist Bob Haggart, drummers Gene Krupa, Joe Grauso and George Wettling and singer Lee Wiley. ~ Scott Yanow Town Hall Concerts, Vol. 3 Music Town Hall Concerts, Vol. 3 Review

| | Houston Person Mellow CD (2009)
Town Hall Concerts, Vol. 3 album
$14.29 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professionals to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad "Too Late Now," the totally restrained "To Each His Own," a poignant "Two Different Worlds," and the deep, mature take of "God Bless the Child." Ever cognizant of blue moods, Person is masterful in expressing his innermost heartfelt feelings, as ...

When Holiday cut these sides for Decca and Commodore Records in the mid-'40s, she had already been hailed as perhaps the greatest jazz vocalist to ever grace a microphone. Even so many decades later, Lady Day's timing, phrasing, sense of dynamics, and overpowering emotional expressiveness are still revelatory, placing her alongside Lester Young, Louis Armstrong, and Coleman Hawkins as one of the great instrumental stylists of early jazz. This collection alternates Holiday classics ("Them There Eyes," "Lover Come Back To Me") with lesser-known gems ("Yesterdays," "I'll Get By"), boasting excellent ensemble playing from Holiday's back-up band and fine, clear sound. This collection of superb performances is a testament to the great Lady Day's talents.
This is part of GRP Records' Priceless Jazz series.
