California's internationally renowned reggae group Groundation emerges from the depths of the studio with their 4th album entitled "We Free Again." The music is fresh and new, proving once again that they are committed to the task of ground-breaking orig
Two things will strike you immediately about this album. First, Groundation is perhaps the finest roots reggae band in California. Its seven members generate slow, smoky, disciplined grooves that rumble and shudder with the inexorable power of an elephant stampede and manage to sound simultaneously sensual and mystical. The second thing that will strike you, for probably not the first time, is the degree to which Apple Gabriel's singing style is an acquired taste. A founding member of Israel Vibration, Gabriel sings as a guest on this album and contributes both lead and background vocals, making this whole album sound like a slightly darker and tighter Israel Vibration project -- which is great, unless you think Israel Vibration's vocal sound is just a bit too thin and whiny for comfort, in which case you'll find yourself trying to listen past the voice to those dark, smoky grooves and waiting anxiously for the songs on which Gabriel's fellow guest, Don Carlos, takes the mike. This happens on the brilliant "Suffer the Right" (though Gabriel sings on this one as well) and the very fine title track. The album's strangest moments come on a four-track suite titled "Cultural Wars," part of which includes unusual chord changes that Gabriel can't quite handle. Overall, this is a strange but ultimately rewarding album. ~ Rick Anderson
Groundation: Harrison Stafford (vocals, guitar, drums, percussion); Marcus Urani (keyboards, percussion).

"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic ...

$13.79 The grassroots consensus on this American reggae band is mixed. On the one hand, there is simply no denying its outrageous way with a roots reggae groove; other than the justly celebrated John Brown's Body, there may not be another white reggae band that plays this music so idiomatically and powerfully. On the other hand, there's singer Harrison Stafford. Unfortunately, he sounds like the demon spawn of Apple Gabriel and Bob Marley, delivering his lyrics with a whiny intensity that he probably thinks denotes spirituality but really comes across as both self-aggrandizing and laughably ...

And the best place for new fans to start. This sumptuous collection, 20 songs strong, rounds up a set's worth of crucial hits, and includes a succinct bio within the sleeve notes. The album works roughly backwards chronologically, kicking off with Beenie Man's 1999 smash, "Bookshelf," then winding its way back through time to 1994's clutch of smash hits -- "World Dance," "Modelling," "Crazy Baldhead," "Slam," and its rhythm twin, "Certain Gal." "Murderer" is slightly out of sequence, and dates from the following year. That paired the DJ with the song's originator, Barrington Levy, while "Baldhead," a cover of the Bob Marley classic, had Beenie join forces with Luciano. Other crucial combos include the smoky "Healing" with Lady Saw and the ultimate bashment, "Dancehall Queen," with Chevelle Franklin. Of course, most of these numbers were bundled onto Beenie's own albums, so fans will be shelling out for just a few songs, or the chance to have all their favorites in one place. But there's little argument on the choices -- "Romie," "Oysters & Conch," the original "Girls Dem Sugar," the fabulous "Foundation," and the DJ's international chart-buster, "Who Am I," and the list goes on and on. Beenie did have hits before 1994, and obviously you won't find them here. However, Jet Star's Gold plugged that gap this same year; between the two sets, fans can have an excellent career-spanning collection. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Despite his huge reputation, Beenie Man doesn't distinguish himself that much from the rest of the dancehall reggae pack. That may be because so much of the pack is imitating him -- his popularity has been considerable ...
