CYCLORAMA is the second studio album that Styx has made without former leader/singer/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung, with whom the group acrimoniously split a few years earlier. It's also the first to include DeYoung's replacement Lawrence Gowan, whose voice is in the same general ballpark as DeYoung's but never seems imitative. Longtime singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw is the dominant presence here, and his delivery of the ostensibly group-composed songs is full of energy and commitment. The songs themselves are not far from the material Styx tackled in their '70s glory days, minus the pomp-rock touches and with a bit more of an edge. That edge is most obvious in a couple of songs that seem to be directed at DeYoung, lyrics dripping in occasionally shocking vitriol. Though the DeYoung days are seemingly gone forever, CYCLORAMA suggests that the remaining members of Styx never wanted time to stand still anyway.

Cyclorama Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Better than I Expected Finally, a new Styx recording with originals!! Granted, this came out in 2003' and I'm 5 years late buying it, but it has some real gems in it. "One With Everything" is reminiscent of the art rock that Styx put out in the 70's, and it kicks; it showcases the immense talent of each member of the band. There's a lot of texture to this recording. The 5.1 surround sound engineering is awesome, and the songwriting talents of Shaw, Gowan, Burnik, Young and Sucherman is stellar. Why I never heard this album on the radio I'll never know. Submitted by tater63 (Tampa, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only did Thomas rack up a string of hits with the Florida group, but he also co-penned "Smooth" from Santana's Grammy-winning 1999 comeback album, SUPERNATURAL.
With SOMETHING TO BE, his solo debut, Thomas pulls out all the stylistic stops, revealing that Matchbox Twenty's alternative-rock format provided a somewhat limited forum for his considerable talents. "Lonely No More" mixes an insistent dance beat with an insanely catchy chorus that sounds straight out of the boy-band textbook. The title track is a sly lyrical dig at poseurs of ...

With the experience of a Grammy-winning, major-label debut under his belt and the requisite pop stardom that goes with it, John Mayer continues forging a steadily impressive musical canon with his third full-length outing, HEAVIER THINGS. Like the introspective musings of fellow, mellow pop singer-songwriters such as Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson, Mayer's songs delve into the subtleties of relationships and their accompanying navel-gazing. ...

| | San Francisco Sound: Then & Now, Vol. 2 CD (1994)
Cyclorama music CDs
$16.69 Like volume one, this is a poorly sequenced and annotated jumble of obscure and readily available vintage 1960s San Francisco rock tracks, filled out with '80s and '90s comeback efforts by musicians in some bands from that period and area, and miscellaneous items that don't have obvious connections to the '60s SF rock scene. It does play a little better than its predecessor, though it could hardly be considered essential, even to diehard Bay Area rock freaks. Again, there's a rare Jefferson Airplane performance, this time "Embryonic Journey" (actually a Jorma Kaukonen solo), recorded live at the Matrix in 1965. The Airplane version of "Runnin' Round This World" (planned for, but removed from their first album) sounds suspiciously like the one you can hear on the standard RCA reissue Takes Off, except it seems to have been funneled through a tincan. Otherwise, there are early Moby Grape and It's a Beautiful Day tracks that are available on their well-known debut albums; a fair 1983 country-rock song by Moby Grape; a 1988 Bob Mosley song credited to "Mosley Grape"; wasted-sounding 1980 cuts by Tim Hardin ...
