Billed as Collective Soul's first independent album since its debut, YOUTH arrived a full three years after the group's previous effort, the compilation 7EVEN YEAR ITCH. The hiatus (and greater creative control) seemed to put Ed Roland and company in a positive place, as the record is an undeniably poppy, feel-good effort. "Better Now" declares the band's newfound confidence explicitly in the lyrics, and the music drives the point home, with a rock & roll guitar riff right out of the AC/DC songbook. "How Do You Love" and "Under Heaven's Skies" are moody, mid-tempo acoustic-guitar-driven tunes reminiscent of THE JOSHUA TREE-era U2. "Counting the Days" is a grungy rocker (with just a bit of twang) in the vein of the group's breakthrough single, "Shine." A welcome return to form that clearly shows Roland has lost none of his talent for hook-filled, punchy pop-rock, YOUTH is proof-positive that time off can rejuvenate even experienced hit-makers.

Don't let the title fool ya! "Youth" is new, modern music, but at the same time the CD is chock-full of very good compositions that will appeal to rockers of all generations. While there's only a couple of tunes on the album that really grab you the first time you play it, there is not a single bad, filler-type song on it! If you have ever enjoyed any Collective Soul before, "Youth" will fit right in. If you have never purchased a Collective Soul CD, here's a good place to start! It's one of the best CDs I have purchased in a long time. Submitted by merlink (Ogden, Utah, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Boys Are Back In Town! It's been nearly 4 years, and, thankfully, fans' patience has been well rewarded. The album is so obviously Collective Soul, especially with the opening riffs in songs like "Home" (probably the funkiest of the 11 songs) and "Counting the Days". The lyrics are almost trademark; Ed Roland has a unique style that makes you want to listen to more than the music. As usual, Ed uses his voice as an instrument of sorts, one of the things that makes "Home" so enjoyable. Of the whole album, 9 songs are very good to brilliant. The other 2 ("General Attitude" and "Feels Like") are still good, as, after all, this IS Collective Soul, but depending on one's tastes, they might not be as catchy, or the type you'd easily hum along to. "Counting the Days" is almost an echo of "Why Part 2" (from their Blender album). I don't like to draw comparisons to other bands, because I believe that this band stands alone, and delivers a form of rock that no other band does. So, as a critic, rather than going into each song, I can tell you that there is a consistency from start to finish that should please fans, and beckon newcomers. Youth
$8.15 Led by the raspy-voiced Ed Roland, Collective Soul avoided falling into the morass of sameness plaguing many of their faceless post-grunge brethren and instead quietly established themselves as one of the more intellectually stimulating bands of the '90s. For its 7EVEN YEAR ITCH compilation, this Georgia quartet consistently displays a deceptively simple approach that avoids bandwagon-jumping and instead focuses on hook-laden, guitar-driven manna with the occasional philosophical observation (not surprising ...

$15.85 The Regal Zonophone label has undergone any number of shifts over the years. Founded as an outlet for Salvation Army music and the like, it was first subverted in the late '60s, when it became host to the likes of psych warlords Procol Harum and Tyrannosaurus Rex. More recently, it provided an outlet for Morrissey; and, in between times, it flourished as a home to some of the Oi! movement's ...
