Geoff Tate album
$21.35 The final evening of their 2003 summer tour found the Allman Brothers planning a special night on the friendly turf of Raleigh, NC, wrapping up yet another road trip with invitations to Susan Tedeschi, Karl Denson, and truly serious jazzbo Branford Marsalis to join the group on-stage. It was all captured by the state-of-the-digital-arts folks at Instant Live, who burn CDs of the shows and make them available to concertgoers who still have a few extra green ones in their pockets by evening's end. On the sprawling three-CD set documenting these particular proceedings, there is indeed some fine music, although in his Allmans premiere appearance Marsalis doesn't fare as well as jam band-friendly Denson; the sax-blowing Marsalis brother (heard on "Dreams" and "Whipping Post") seems shoehorned between the guitars and strains a bit over the loud rock groove. Elsewhere, Gregg Allman is in fine voice, particularly on the slower numbers like the stellar read of "Gambler's Roll" from Seven Turns and the world-weary "Old Before My Time"; Derek Trucks is indeed a wunderkind as advertised; Oteil Burbridge is the most proficient bassist the band has ever had; the drum section remains a powerhouse; and Warren Haynes knocks the ball out of the park with a "Whipping Post" solo that seemingly condenses and channels the ...

| | Metallica ... And Justice For All CD (1988)
Geoff Tate music CDs
$14.69 Following the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton, Metallica regrouped with Flotsam & Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted to record this ambitious double album. Metallica made their reputation playing complex music at superhuman speed, and when James Hetfield's lyrics caught up with his compositional skills, the band became a force to be reckoned with. Everything came together on 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS, and JUSTICE picks up where PUPPETS left off.
Utilizing intricate yet crunching riffs, layered guitar melodies and intelligent lyrics, Metallica forged an identity as the leader of '80s metal. Hetfield's lyrics are often quite dark, touching on injustice (the title song), insanity ...

| | Take 6 So Much 2 Say CD (1990)
Geoff Tate music CDs
$12.19 Take 6's second recording is almost the equal of their first. The six singers (Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Mervyn E. Warren and Alvin Chea) perform some near-miraculous ensembles on a variety of original material, all of which contains gospel-oriented lyrics. Take 6's first two CDs are their strongest, before the innovative group started to water down both their message and their jazz-influenced harmony sound with the addition of occasional instruments. ~ Scott Yanow
This second release from 1990 extended the stunning originality of Take Six. Most of the songs on So Much 2 Say are originals, again enhanced by the groups willingness to use any musical tradition. Particularly notable ...

Geoff Tate CD music
$43.69 From the outgrowth of Steampacket, a band that included not only Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll, but also a young Rod Stewart, came Auger and Driscoll's collective effort that produced two albums. When Driscoll left in 1969 to pursue a solo career, Auger, drummer Clive Thacker, and bassist Dave Ambrose continued as Brian Auger & the Trinity. Open has been unfairly characterized as a kind of groove jazz rip, one that combines Wes Montgomery, Jimmy McGriff, and the rock sensibilities of the psychedelic era. Whatever. There are many tracks here, from deep grooved funky jazz to lilting ballads and greasy blues numbers and the skronky exotica number "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph." Auger may not have been as gifted an organist as Alan Price technically, but he could more than hold his own on the Hammond B-3 (as evidenced by the first two tracks here which are instrumentals, "In And Out" and "Isola Nate"). He was also able to pull more sounds out of the instrument than any of his peers. Auger wasn't much of a vocalist, but he could dig deep and get the emotion out of a song -- especially in a funky number like "Black Cat," which featured a killer though uncredited studio horn section. Driscoll's contributions are all on the second half of the album, beginning with the shuffling choogle of Lowell Fulsom's "Tramp," continuing through a moving reading of Pops Staples' "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)," two Auger originals, and concluding in a reading of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" that single-handedly established ...
| | Mountain Climbing! CD (1970) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Germany
Geoff Tate music CDs
$23.65 When 1970 began, New York hard rockers Mountain were one of the most promising new bands. By the year's end, due to their exceptional sophomore effort, CLIMBING, they were one of the US's premier rock outfits. After a 1969 debut (while the album was titled MOUNTAIN, it was credited solely to Leslie West) led to a highly coveted spot in the original Woodstock festival, the band was thrust into the spotlight, ...
