This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Incubus: Brandon Boyd (vocals, percussion); Mike Einziger (guitar); Ben Kenney (bass guitar); Jose Antonio Pasillas II (drums); DJ Kilmore (turntables). At the beginning of their career, Incubus was rightly lumped in with the legions of post-Korn alt metal/rap-rock bands swarming America in the latter days of the 20th century. But by their third album, 1999's Make Yourself, they had separated from the pack, as indicated by the presence of producer Scott Litt, best-known for his work with R.E.M.. It signaled that the band was serious, and they began expanding their rap-metal template on that album and its follow-up, 2001's Morning View, completing their transition from juvenelia to maturity with 2003's Crow Left of the Murder. Switching from Litt to producer Brendan O'Brien, a man who has been with Pearl Jam longer than any of their drummers, Incubus has opted for a clean, crisp yet heavy sound which allows them to aggressively switch from crunching metallic riffs to jazzy prog interludes. It's an expansive musical vision charged with some righteous anger; although vocalist Brandon Boyd doesn't write explicit protests, there sure are enough allusions to social turbulence to make this the first politically aware alt metal album in many a year. This maturation is even more evident in the music, how the band actually swings on "Zee Deveel," or how guitarist Michael Einzinger's jazz-influenced solos seem both carefully constructed and casually tossed off, or how Boyd's voice shifts from song to song (or during a song, as on the opening "Megalomaniac," which sounds like a bizarre blend of Mr. Mister's Richard Page and John Lydon). All this maturation does mean that Incubus may shed some older fans, since the naked ambitions on this record are far removed from the earnest, angst-ridden earlier records, but so be it -- A Crow Left of the Murder... is far more interesting than any of their other records, or their peers'. At times, they may stretch themselves a little too far here, but the ambition is admirable and the achievements are tangible -- a real breakthrough for the band. [A Crow Left of the Murder was also released in a limited-edition set with a bonus DVD containing a 26-minute documentary featuring footage from the band's Lollapalooza and Bridge Benefit performances, and of Boyd's injury.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine In 2003, after successfully renegotiating their contract with Epic, Incubus struggled further in parting ways with bassist Dirk Lance. When a proven lineup has a successful chemistry, there is always the danger of tampering with that magic when a personnel change occurs. Luckily, Incubus dodged that bullet and struck gold with four-stringer Ben Kenney (Roots/Blackalicious). The requisite elements that Incubus fans have come to expect are firmly in place on A CROW LEFT OF THE MURDER, with the up-tempo bombast of "Megalomaniac" and "Beware? Criminal," the softer dynamics of "Southern Girl," and radio-friendly "Talk Shows On Mute." What may come as a surprise are the jazzy, proggy moments. In that light, some nods to Rush crop up, as with the chorus of the title track, "Agoraphobia" and the extended instrumental section of "Pistola." Guitarist Mike Einziger offers up plenty of quirky, interesting guitar work, especially in "Sick, Sad Little World" and "Priceless." CROW stands as an evolved statement of intent for Incubus, and a promise that the sky's the limit for this bird of flight.
Rolling Stone (3/4/04, p.63) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The band still indulges in plenty of effects-happy instrumental gymnastics and tricky rhythms, but [A CROW] is also its most consistently tune-based album." Mojo (Publisher) (2/04, p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Songs like 'Sick', 'Sad Little World', and 'See Deveel' are exhilarating, Incubus trading their outer aggression for inner animus." Incubus A Crow Left of the Murder Songs A Crow Left of the Murder Music A Crow Left of the Murder Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Mean album Both bass players are legends. I think that the new bass player adds in a new dimension and layer that the band were lacking on morning view. (Dirks playing on make yourself was insane though) All of their albums since S.C.I.E.N.C.E have been really strong and solid, free of album fillers. They are all quite different and that keeps incubus interesting. This album is more progressive than morning view but still has a lot of hooks.I can't help but wonder if Incubus would have remained fresh with the same bass player.
Give it a few plays before you judge, and don't judge a mean album on the chessy kinda lame single Meglomaniac...
Can't wait for the new album. Incubus are the best rock band around at the moment. Submitted by Long time Incubus fan (Melbourne, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
My Review This album does not add up to the others, there seems to be something missing... oh the Great bass player Dirk Lance. So far I'm not liking the band as much without him. Will see if their next album is any better. There are only a couple of song on here that are good, only two. I do like the song "make a move" from the soundtrack "Stealth" too bad it's not on this album. Submitted by Gabe M (Wichita, KS, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Appreciation... I appreciate the fact that Incubus is willing to attempt new styles of music and stretch there talent and this album has them experimenting with a new sound once again but is not a strong effort. Any Incubus fan would agree that this is probably there weakest effort. Although there are a few songs that can be enjoyable like "Sick, sad little world" and "Megalomaniac" but the album is just not all that great. If you want to hear brilliant Incubus listen to there last album, Morning View. Submitted by DirectorG13 (Miami, FL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
amazing An essential album.
Takes a bit to grow as it is quite different to the old Incubus stuff but is well worth the wait.
Highly repeatable.
Morning View seemed quite a tired album but Incubus have a fresh new energy with the new bassist.
Get it.
Highlight: Beware Criminal

$14.19 Born Tai K. Rotan in Richmond, VA in the summer of 1980, this brilliant young producer, budding fashion mogul, and social activist credits his success and rising popularity to the foundation laid down by his parents, Renee Kemp-Rotan and father Eric Rotan. Tai’s father, a musician, played the bass in several bands in the Washington, DC area. Notably, he played with Pharaoh Saunders, who was the protégé of jazz great, John Coltrane. In addition, the senior Rotan also passed on a love and mastery of mass communications, specializing in editing, directing, producing and camera operation. Tai’s mother always taught him to be well read and stressed excelling in academia.
