Hellogoodbye album
$17.59 Finally. This 1967 concert recorded at the Anaheim Convention Center, just a few weeks after his Hollywood Bowl show, was recorded in its entirety and released as a single LP with a total of 14 tracks. This double-disc CD reissue contains 23 tracks, and is, as it survives, the entire gig. In addition, the sound has been painstakingly remastered; the result is a brilliant sounding document. Flow in a Donovan concert is important, and here, presented as it occurred, listeners can drift right into the tidepool of magic. The band is a quintet with Harold McNair on flute and saxophones, Loren Newkirk on piano, Andy Tronosco on upright bass, Tony Carr on drums, and John Carr on bongos. Donovan plays acoustic guitar throughout. The hippy mysticism and flower power poet is everywhere here. This isn't rock star excess at all, but an organic, drenched-in-sunshine concert full of gentleness with a premium on good vibes. Tunes not on the original LP and CD issues include "Sunny Goodge Street," "Epistle to Derroll," "Sand and Foam," "Hampstead Incident," "To Try for the Sun," "Someone Singing," "The Tinker and the Crab," and a partial recording of the second half of "Catch the Wind," which was included for purposes of completion, but was marred by a malfunctioning tape recording. Donovan was already an expert at getting audiences to eat out of his hand, and here that happens in spades. In fact the only album that comes close to having the flow of this concert was the studio recording of Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. While it's true this is only available as an import, it should be sought out by any fan, or, for that matter, any cynic who hasn't heard this particularly beautiful and airy genius of Donovan Leitch. With this presentation, Donovan In Concert becomes one of the great live albums of the '60s. ~ Thom Jurek
This is a great record, with one important caveat -- anyone looking for the Donovan of AM radio and upbeat ditties like "Sunshine Superman" will have to go for more recent live albums. Donovan in Concert has been neglected over the decades by the fans, who apparently would have preferred a set that encompassed the hits, yet it presents a surprisingly vital side of Donovan's music, as well as excellent versions of some of his best album cuts and good versions of the two actual hits that are here. In contrast to his studio sides, which often reflected the sensibilities of producer Mickie Most more than those of Donovan, the live material here, cut at the Anaheim Convention Center in early 1968, features Donovan doing his music, his way. One has to give ...
| | J Thompson Inside World CD (2006)
Hellogoodbye CD music
$18.99 By 2005, it was a common complaint among smooth jazz insiders and fans that the format was too bland and controlled, and there was, perhaps, too much of an emphasis on smooth jazz radio stations for playing format "legends" rather than giving indie talent a break. Veteran guitar sideman J. Thompson is one of the few independent musicians to breakthrough with his 2003 release Romantic Night being voted the number one most-played indie CD of 2003 by smoothjazz.com and his song "Tell Me the Truth" hitting the Top Ten on the airplay charts. That success should continue with Inside World, an amiable collection which opens with the crisp and catchy electric guitar-driven gem "Marché Marché," and chills the night with the obvious first single, the thoughtful and romantic "Tale of Tiernan." That dual vibe of energetic light funk and graceful ballads permeates the disc, whose standout tracks include the bright, rockin' blues-tinged "So Sexy" and the bubbly retro-soul tune "Gimme Sum." For more adventurous listeners, a few cuts take Thompson out of the radio-ready zone, particularly the more trad jazz-minded, drum brush and synth-harmonica driven shuffle (which sounds kind of like a cute TV theme), and the anthemic rock ballad closer "One Day," which calls to mind some of Neal Schon's more brilliant solo work in the later '90s. ~ Jonathan Widran
BIO Guitarist J. Thompson brings his deep background in jazz, rock, and R&B to his music. His new release "Inside World" follows his award winning 2003 CD "Romantic Night," and continues to redefine contemporary jazz. From the upbeat to the calming and romantic, the new CD takes you away from the every day and lets you go to your own "Inside World." "These days we all need some time to escape into our own place to take a breather from the stress of every day life. Music can really cure and energize the soul, says J. "Inside World" gives you a chance to recharge." J. says "My favorite thing about this album is that it has a retro sound - it's new "old" music. It feels familair to many of us who grew up with jazz and rock and funk but it is contemporary and fresh at the same time. It's a mix of styles because most of us like several styles of music." And J's line up includes some of the world's best players - on keyboards Peter Horvath, drums Oscar Seaton, percussion Louis Conte and a special guest appearance by Norton Buffalo on chromatic harp. A professional musician since the age of 16, Thompson's expertise on guitar, bass and drums has led him to participate in a wide range of projects ...

BÉLA, born into a Portuguese heritage was given a diary for her seventh birthday. Expression as she had known it, would never be the same. The self-described "loner" quickly became addicted to the release offered by a clean page and a sharp pencil. Soon after, she began adding melodies to parts of her diary entries with an old keyboard. Years later, she would take her personal songs to ...
