Standard Screen; Soundtrack English BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE is a labor of love from filmmaker Rick McKay to a bygone era stemming from his own experience of arriving in New York City in the early 1980s and discovering that the Great White Way of his dreams no longer existed. Almost 20 years later, McKay began interviewing the legends of Broadway in order to investigate whether or not the 1930s through the '60s actually constituted a "golden age." McKay interviewed more than 100 performers, composers, and writers over the course of five years with no crew and no budget, just moxie and his digital camera. The result is a compelling walk down memory lane, with anecdotes from the stars and creators of the finest musical and dramatic productions of yesteryear. Among those interviewed are Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera, Ben Gazzara, Shirley MacLaine, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Gwen Verdon, Uta Hagen, Bea Arthur, Jerry Orbach, Julie Harris, Robert Goulet, and Elizabeth Ashley. His interviews also result in the rediscovery of some long-forgotten stars. Peppered with clips of original Broadway performances, McKay's film preserves a period in the history of American theater that will likely never be repeated, and that should be celebrated. Broadway: The Golden Age Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Words aren't enough I wish I could have given this film ten stars-I feel that strongly about it. The simplest of all premises-find a couple of stars to tell you about when theatre was a living vital force. Well those few stars became over a hundred and the rest as they say is history. And not just history, but an important historical document, living and breathing. Find out what it was like when theate was a regular part of life, not just an "event" once a year. Funny, sad, moving and uplifting. Also Thrilling and invigorating. Rick McKay's passion matches matches that of his subjects and it shows. Not just in the way he treats his subjects, but in the way he and his crew tracked down rare and in some cases unseen footage(I'm thinking particularly of Laurette Taylor's screen test, and my jaw just dropped!) People we've known in a certain way, we suddenly discover the breadth of their talent and it's just mind blowing. It's kind of like live theatre's answer to "That's Entertainment", and to co-opt that films tag line "Boy do we need it now!" Anyone with even a passing interest in theatre, and certainly any acting student NEEDS this film And don't forget to check out the marvellous extras, and make sure you listen to Rick's insightful and moving commentary. Possibly one of the most perfect films ever, this is one time I can't wait for the sequels.

Broadway: The Golden Age DVD
$15.45 Director Bradley Beesley's revealing documentary THE FEARLESS FREAKS fashions an insightful portrait of eccentric Oklahoma City rock band the Flaming Lips. Shot over a period of ten years, Beesley's film achieves an unprecedented level of intimacy due to his longtime friendship with the band, whom he first met in 1991 when they needed a filmmaker to shoot their music videos. Over the ensuing years, the Lips allowed Beesley to document not only their ever-evolving musical career--which grew from punk-drenched psychedelia to Brian Wilson-esque orchestral pop--but also the personal lives of band members Wayne Coyne, Steven Drodz, and Michael Ivins in their most private moments, including the death of Coyne's father and, most hauntingly, Drodz's ongoing heroin addiction. Culled from over 400 hours ...
