Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums); Ray Wilson (vocals); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass guitar); Anthony Phillips, Steve Hackett (guitar); Tony Banks (keyboards); John Matthew (drums, percussion); Nir Zidkiyahu (drums); Peter Gabriel.
Liner Note Author: Hugh Fielder.
Platinum Collection is a triple-disc covering the biggest hits and anthems from Genesis' career. Not a bad idea for a set, especially because it does contain the relatively rare non-LP single "Paperlate," but it's not necessarily executed as well as it could be. First off, there are the inevitable omissions, highlighted by such Genesis standards as "Man on the Corner" and "No Reply at All," but also extending to such smaller '80s hits as "Just a Job to Do" and "Anything She Does," not to mention various album tracks, particularly from the Peter Gabriel era. Nevertheless, Platinum Collection handles the Gabriel years better than 1999's Turn It on Again: The Hits, primarily because it has the space to stretch out and serve up a full disc of early Genesis, and while "Watcher of the Skies" is missed, it's hard to argue with any Gabriel comp that includes "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," "Counting out Time," "Carpet Crawlers," "Firth of Fifth," "The Musical Box," "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)," and a full-length "Supper's Ready." Actually, that's not entirely true -- there is one complaint that can be lodged against the Gabriel disc and that can be lodged against Platinum Collection as a whole: it's sequenced in reverse chronological order (with the notable exception of the post-Phil Collins cut "Calling All Sections" being tucked away at the end of the first disc, since there's absolutely no way that even the most devoted Genesis fan would stick with rest of the comp if it began with that tune). While it's not a fatal blow to the value of the compilation -- this does, after all, contain most of the songs casual fans would want in one handy little set -- starting with We Can't Dance and slowly rolling back over the years makes for some uneasy listening, since the reverse order not only prevents the album from gaining momentum, it doesn't provide any new insights to the band's work, the way that Jimmy Page's non-chronological sequencing on the Led Zeppelin box did. If the entire set was flipped around, beginning with "The Knife" and ending with "No Son of Mine," it would be a better listen as an album, but as a clearing-house for most, but not all, of the big Genesis songs, Platinum Collection is worthwhile for casual fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
From the prog-rock majesty of its Peter Gabriel-fronted era to the smooth pop of its later Phil Collins-helmed years, Genesis created a fascinating catalog that spanned decades. The British group's finest tracks are compiled on this three-disc PLATINUM COLLECTION, which proceeds in (roughly) reverse-chronological order. While the hits are plenty (and mostly featured on the first disc), this thorough set also includes many revered album tracks from Gabriel's wonderfully quirky tenure with the ensemble (see the epic "Supper's Ready" and the lilting "Carpet Crawlers"). Although Genesis fans often fall into distinct Gabriel and Collins camps, this comprehensive set provides a solid bridge across the two notably different periods.

4 stars Transendence
I've seen a lot of division between fans of this groups. I know people who would prefer the later day works to that of the Gabreil era, and vice versa. Only track that I've don't really like was Jesus He Knows Me, and should have been filled in with a second track from Calling All Stations. Although it wasn't their best disc, Ray Wilson did a good job. Otherwise, the collection is well chosen, strongly reprsenting what has been done under the Genesis banner. It's not for a fan locked in one era of the band's history

2 stars Buyer Beware!
Great collection or not - of the 40 songs, a great many are "remixed" by Nick Davis - 23 to be exact. And most of them are the older tracks. It seems disingenuous to call these "original versions", even if they are not re-recordings. (Davis co-produced the "We Can't Dance" album.) This is not mentioned in the CD description above, but I think it should be noted.

4 stars Good...
Well done job, all 3 CDs are great, the remixes are well done, but the error? the songs, why an Edit of Tonight, Tonight, Tonight and not the complete?, why that sh*t of Calling All Stations and not Down and Out? why Many Too Many and not Silver Rainbow? why A Trick of the Tail and not Dreaming While You Sleep? and why Carpet Crawlers and not In The Cage? all these songs are garbage, crap, specially Calling All Stations and the tired voice of Ray Wilson, it will be better if the songs I said were puted there instead of the others, but anyway there are good songs like No Son of Mine, I Can't Dance, Land of Confusion, Home By The Sea, Second H.B.T.S., Illegal Alien, Paperlate, Keep It Dark, Turn It On Again, In That Quiet Earth, Ripples, Firth of Fifth and The Musical Box, so, buy it anyway if you are a fan of the band and you want to hear some good songs on 3 CDs.

3 stars A BETTER GENESIS?
I have just read the review submitted by "bettergenesis" regarding the Genesis triple C.D, The platinum Collection. Why can't people let bands evolve into other directions?. I loved the Gabriel era of Genesis, but I didn't like everything they did with him in the band.Likewise with Phil Collins. I absolutely loved the albums, A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. But I would never expect them to keep pumping out similar sounding albums one after the other. When Steve Hackett left, obviously their sound would have to change! Its all part of growing! No, I don't like ALL the songs they have put out since DUKE. However, I can appreciate that they wanted to explore other sounds and styles. The Invisible Touch C.D is a powerful and diverse selection of music! For me I Can't Dance is nowhere near as strong, but has some tracks that I always play! Calling All Stations deserved more attention and air play, than what it got. I guess at the end of the day, the C.D buying public by this stage, thought that Phil Collins WAS Genesis, and vise versa! To those who wanted Genesis to always stay locked in the 1970's, I say this. Get over it! That was then, and this is now! The band has given its listeners a panorama of musical feasts over the years, and we should be grateful that they were not prepared to be pigeon-holed into just one musical catagory. If I had been putting together this three C.D set. I would have omitted Illegal Alien, Jesus he Knows Me,and Paperlate. In their place I would have had, Match of the Day, Its Yourself and Not About Us. Apart from that, this selection gives our ears a good idea of what Genesis were about, over All those years!

With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee's Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for the indie-garage set, sort of a Strokes for the South. While there were hints of a new direction on their third album, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY BY THE NIGHT, follows through with a near-reinvention of the Kings' sound. ONLY BY THE NIGHT could be mistaken for avant-indie cult heroes the Liars on a Southern vacation, as ...
