ORIGINAL SINNER is a 22-track release by '60s pop singer Lou Christie, including "Lightnin' Strikes" and "Baby, We've Got To Run Away."
Lou Christie's stay with MGM Records was pretty short, lasting only a little more than one year starting in late 1965. It did take in quite a bit of recording, however, including two albums and a bunch of singles, among them his chart-topping "Lightnin' Strikes." This collection assembles 22 MGM tracks, though it's likely that only "Lightnin' Strikes" and, perhaps, the controversial Top Twenty hit "Rhapsody in the Rain" (present here in both its censored and uncensored versions) will be familiar if you're not a Christie buff. As is so often the case when you go deeper than the obvious hits, not only is there nothing else here on the level of those two songs, but there's nothing else particularly striking, to make a bad pun. Most of the tunes are typical generic New York AM radio-ready pop/rock (well, they would have been ready for AM radio if they had hooks as strong as those in "Lightnin' Strikes"), heavy on the falsetto vocals by both Christie and shrill female backup singers, showing a debt or at least similarity to some of the mid-'60s work by the Four Seasons. Occasionally it departs a little from the formula, like on the lush '50s doo wop-inflected ballad "Diary"; the positively weird gypsy-rock hybrid of a few songs (including one, "Lita," represented by both the officially released version and a previously unissued alternate mix); and a few Jack Nitzsche-produced cuts with expectedly Phil Spector-esque orchestrations. The first-class packaging and liner notes make this a good investment for Christie fans, though lesser admirers will have all they want of his MGM recordings on greatest-hits collections. ~ Richie Unterberger
2008 compilation from the Pop/Rock singer/songwriter spotlighting his mid '60s recordings for the MGM label, which includes his first commercial breakthrough hit 'Lightning Strikes'. This collection has been put together by noted US pop expert Harry Young who has also supplied the magnificent memorabilia and photo sources. There is no other collection of Christie's MGM recordings on the market, and so for fans (he numbers Madonna and Springsteen among them), this is an essential purchase. 22 tracks. RPM. | | Cheryl Wheeler Defying Gravity CD (2005)
Original Sinner: The Very Best Of The MGM Recordings
$14.25 Much like the moon in the painting that graces the cover of Defying Gravity, Cheryl Wheeler's musical offerings tend to illuminate the darker side of life. Soured relationships, a troubled world, and even a hurricane are quietly explored through Wheeler's sage lyrics and gentle acoustic guitar. This description may make the disc sound a bit depressing, but the richness of Wheeler's voice and music provide solace even when exploring the darkest places. Dealing with the loss of someone can be difficult, and in the poignant "Since You've Been Gone" Wheeler wonders why "a woman my age," with her attendant wisdom, still manages to take it all so hard. "Must Be Sinking Now" proves that moving on after an intense relationship dissolves can be just as difficult, and even the end of a season can bring one to tears as the "Summer's Almost Over." Throughout Wheeler's songs a listener can recognize that someone else has had similar experiences, and that can make her lyrics more cathartic than depressing. Not all is gloomy in Wheeler's world, and there are glimmering passages of happiness in the pretty views from the "Little Road" or the mounting wanderlust of "Alice," a widower ready to see the world. Even the impending blow of Florida's Hurricane Floyd can't dampen the amusing moments in the retro jazz of "Here Come Floyd." As the disc progresses, Defying Gravity unfolds as one of Wheeler's most consistent works ...
