Often praised, long troubled actor Robert Downey Jr. makes his solo vocal debut with The Futurist. Having sang in various film and TV projects, it was often rumored that Downey wanted to make a move to the music business. Well, the rumors were true and the results are largely laudable. Vocally, Downey has a unique sound that falls somewhere between the melancholy twang of Bruce Hornsby and the soulful grit of Joe Cocker -- think Bruce Springsteen doing a cabaret night. Musically, he lands squarely in the adult contemporary vein with songs that recall So-era Peter Gabriel and post-Soul Cages Sting -- synthesizers abound. Respectably, Downey wrote many of the songs on The Futurist as well as collaborated with journeyman pop scribe Mark Hudson -- who also shares production credits here with one-time Yes producer Jonathan Elias. That said, Downey's ear tends toward the languid and his lyrics, while heartfelt, are obtuse and often seem to dance around deep issues without revealing much. For example, on the title track he sings, "They'll take the walk/We'll sage the world/Sounds like October/A Futurist nose/Our furious, curious, fantasist code" -- code indeed. Not surprisingly, though, Downey the actor turns out to be a great interpreter of other musicians' work. His duet with Jon Anderson on the classic Yes track "Your Move" sounds absurd in theory, but the rub between Downey's throaty croon and Anderson's angelic background vocals is truly invigorating. Similarly, he seems to bring all the highs and lows of his life and career to bear on his trio version of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," featuring legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden. While the album may not hold any clues to the future of Downey's music career, in the moment The Futurist is as unpredictably moving as the best of Downey's film work. ~ Matt Collar Robert Downey Jr.'s debut album features a star-studded cast of musicians, not the least of whom is Yes's lead singer Jon Anderson (who performs backing vocals on his own "Your Move"). This is a confident step for an actor whose drug problems were making lurid headlines just a few years before this record's 2004 release. Allusions to these tribulations form the bulk of the material on THE FUTURIST, from the opening "Man Like Me" with its "This is a habit I'm breaking now forever" lyric, to the 12-step program reference in "Broken." Downey's voice sounds suitably lived-in, displaying more than a passing acquaintance with the oeuvre of Elton John, and the arrangements are played as impeccably as you'd expect by the outstanding roster of Los Angeles session musicians. Lyrically, Downey can be quite dark, as his macabre role as the corpse in the album's artwork (a tribute to Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson") implies. However, the inclusion of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" (Downey played Chaplin in the eponymous 1992 biopic) is perhaps an indication of a brighter future for the Futurist Music | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Classical CDs, Pop, Box Sets, Singer/Songwriter, Rock | | Label | Sony Classical | | Orig Year | 2004 | | All Time Sales Rank | 1695 | | CD Universe Part number | 6794060 | | Catalog number | 92654 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Nov 23, 2004 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Jonathan Elias; Mark Hudson; Vicenzo LoRusso; Jonathan Elias; Mark Hudson | | Engineer | Bruce Sugar; Vicenzo LoRusso; Doug Reid; Kevin Churko; Bruce Sugar | | Personnel | Charlie Bisharat - violin Jon Anderson - vocals, background vocals Jim Cox - piano, Hammond b-3 organ Tom Canning - Hammond b-3 organ Charlie Haden - bass guitar Alan Broadbent - piano Gregg Bissonette Cameron Stone - cello Jeff Bunnell - flugelhorn Mark Hudson - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, percussion, background vocals

Futurist Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Never want to stop listening... I really love this cd, and can't figure out why so many people slam this it on other web sites.
I first downloaded "Your Move", and at first I wasn't really into it, but a little while after I switched off my mp3 player, I had the beginning of the song playing over and over in my head (weird, no?)
So, a few days later, I downloaded "Details" and fell in love with it the first time I listened all the way through (I'm pretty much crazy about his piano, by the way). ;)
Soon after that, ,I downloaded the cd off Amazon, and received it about a week and a half later. I had read several negative reviews about the cd, and decided that even none of the songs were anywhere near as good as "Details", anybody who could play, sing, and write a song that beautiful, the other tracks couldn't be too bad, right?
On my first listen of the whole cd, I decided that, no, the other songs weren't anywhere as good as "Details", but I still didn't regret buying it. Once I finished the album, I decided to listen to it again. As soon as I heard the first song on the album, "Man Like Me", on the second listen, the first thing that hit me was that his voice didn't sound as...unpolished as it had the first time around. The same went for the rest of the album.
By the second or third day, I was listening to almost nothing but this cd, and about a week later, I was very much in love with the whole album.
I think that a lot of people who have heard this cd have only listened to it partially, instead of giving it the full attention that it deserves.
If you are considering purchasing this album, I strongly encourage you to do so, listening to the entire album, and then start again; it might surprise you. To those people who already have a copy of "The Futurist" and don't really care for it, I really hope you give it another try. Some of the best cds are the ones that grow on you.

Simply Amazing I first saw Robert Downey, Jr. the musician when he appeared on the Oprah Show. I was blown away by his immense talent. I ran out the same day a purchased this cd. It is one of my favorite discs and has earned a permanent spot in my stereo. The piano and bass in his tracks is memorizing. It creates a calm yet upbeat mood in your house. I can listen to it over and over. It is a breath of fresh air during a time when the music industry is overrun with hip-hop and copycat garage bands. If you don't have this disc and have a true appreciation for music with a soul, run and buy this cd. You won't regret it. Submitted by Kelly (Washington, DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Interestinig - But Can the Cigs Dude! This is one of those moody, deeply personal recordings that takes several listenings to warm up to completely. I was instantly attracted to the piano intros on several of the songs, but then started becoming irritated with Downey's smokey (literally) renderings that seemed a bit too self-involved and repetitive. You have to admire the guy, though. He really took a gamble with this one and I respect his intense need to express himself, albeit somewhat depressingly, Submitted by stephenacs (Palm Desert, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
