| | Butti 49 Habit CD Butti 49 Discography of CDs
Butti 49 (aka Snorre Seim and Oyvind Jakobsen) release their debut album on exceptional records, having attracted attention from all parts of the world with their remixes and a series of dazzling singles from their own Norwegian heroes. Based in Stavanger, the Butti's have been a mainstay of their hometown scene for several years with a growing reputation which spread across Norway and then to other parts of the world. They released a series of well received singles, both on their own imprint and on a number of other well respected labels like Guidance and Nuphonic, which spread the word even further. In addition. their services as remixers have been in demand, their list of remix credits is extensive with such heavyweights as Kyoto Jazz Massive, Nu Spirit Helsinki, Sirius B, and Ennio Morricone to name but a few. Their music has also been featured on numerous compilations including DJ Spinna's Raiding the Crates on Shadow Records, Compost Records, DNM and many more.
Butti 49: Mayia James (vocals); Didrik Ingvaldsen (trumpet); Oyvind Jakobsen (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, bass instrument, drum, programming); John Alan Lilija (upright bass); Emo. Personnel: Thomas Dybdahl (vocals, background vocals); Emo, Nils Christian Fossdal, Ingvill Bjorland (vocals); Leonard Chaparian, Didrik Ingvaldsen (trumpet); Trond Tellefsen (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet). Recording information: Afga$ Studios, Stavanger, Norway; Fluidity Studios, London, England; Gulehuset, Stavanger, Norway; Metropolis Radiostudios, M'Sjonskirken. Photographer: Johannes Worsoe Berg. Following on the tails of Koop, the Norwegian pair of Snorre Seim and Oyvind Jakobsen continue the Northern European encroachment into the realms of jazz-based electronic funk with Habit, in a genre previously dominated by German producers. With earlier single releases on the high reputable Guidance and Nuphonic labels, the duo's debut album offers up all of the shuffling percussion, liquid bass, and quick-licking accompaniment one has come to demand from this sort of release. Live instrumentalists play along with delicately programmed electronics, with vocals by Emo, Mayia James, and Lucy May filling out various tracks. "Loving You" presents a sitar-friendly R&B feel, while the instrumental "Kongo Mongo" and singsong "Incurable" have a squelchy techno and shaking disco beat, respectively. "Boogaloo" does exactly that, with an extremely familiar Latin percussion and piano refrain that breaks into a driven trumpet solo by Didrik Ingvaldsen. Reflecting on the global tech of Kirk Degiorgio, as well as the organic funk of Rainer Trüby, Butti 49 will certainly find their way into globally conscious DJ crates and style conscious boutiques extremely quickly. ~ Joshua Glazer

| | Charles Papasoff International Baritone Conspiracy CD (1996) (Import) Canada
Habit
$12.95 Personnel includes: Charles Papasoff, Hamiet Bluiett, Jean Derome, David Mott, Christian Gavillet, Bo Van Der Werf (baritone saxophone). Canadian baritone saxophonist Charles Papasoff has, with this recording, pulled off the heretofore unimaginable: pulled together a sextet comprised strictly of baritone players from Europe and North America and commissioned each member to bring some new chart to the table that would showcase the seemingly limitless range of expression the baritone holds -- which goes against the historical jazz grain where the horn has been either ignored or relegated to the background shadows of a bandstand with very few exceptions. This conspiracy -- of a group working in concert with one another -- was indeed performed that way at the Victoriaville Festival in 1995. The set starts off with two Papasoff contributions, one the long intro to "Mouvements," which consists of five sections: a solo, ensemble rhythmic workout, ...
