(2 Customer Reviews)
Post-breakup relations between Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were often strained; regarding the possibility of a reunion, Simon once famously remarked "no rush." Nevertheless, like many a love/hate relationship, theirs was marked by periodic highs when they put their differences aside and sang together again. OLD FRIENDS: LIVE ON STAGE marks one of these peaks, with the trail-blazing folk-rock duo performing a slew of their old hits together some four decades on. When Simon performed such S&G classics as "Bridge over Troubled Water" or "The Sound of Silence" on his own over the years, he'd often drastically revise the arrangements, but here the duo sticks more closely to the original versions, honoring their initial intentions. They also touch on their earliest years together, reprising their early (under the name Tom & Jerry) Everly Brothers-esque hit "Hey, Schoolgirl" before bringing out the Everlys themselves for a rendition of the latter's classic "Bye Bye Love." While a previously unreleased song, "Citizen of the Planet" is added as an extra enticement, its the lovingly rendered 1960s chestnuts ("Mrs. Robinson," "Leaves That Are Green," etc.) that will most strongly attract faithful fans.

Old Friends: Live On Stage
$16.19 Between 1967 and 2004, the SMILE sessions were pretty much the Dead Sea Scrolls of pop music. Well documented as head Beach Boy Brian Wilson's answer to the Beatles' masterpiece SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (which was itself largely an answer to the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), the tracks laid down in '67 for the projected SMILE album were the furthest afield anyone ...

Old Friends: Live On Stage
$24.29 Taking the place of the obligatory cd two-fer of GP and GREVIOUS ANGEL, Gram Parsons's THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS covers it all and then some for Grampires of all stripes. Produced by Emmylou Harris and Parsons cohort James Austin, this beautifully designed three-disc set includes one disc devoted to each solo record and a third featuring outtakes from each album's sessions. With fewer overdubs and Gram and Emmylou's vocals front-and-center in the mix, the final disc brims with the emotive soul and earthbound angelic vocals the two perfected. Among the final discs many highlights are looser alternate takes of "She" and "Streets of Baltimore" from GP and a "Hickory Wind" unadorned by the ridiculous fake crowd noise that mars the GRIEVOUS ANGEL version. ...

| | Live From Austin, TX: Cory Morrow CD (2007) Digipak
Old Friends: Live On Stage
$12.15 It's not an especially good sign when a singer/songwriter releases a live album and the two best songs (by a considerable margin) are the two covers. Cory Morrow is a popular draw in his home state of Texas, enough so to merit an appearance on the long-running PBS roots music showcase Austin City Limits, and this 11-song set was recorded during ...
