Here, Ashanti retains the tenderness that she built her reputation on, but proves she's unafraid to take chances on this always-engaging, often-surprising record. She opens with the slow-groove ballad, "Still Down," but swiftly ups the ante with the borderline-industrial "Only U," with its dark, thrashing keyboards tempered by a sweet message of sensual love. Ashanti also flirts with the styles of Jill Scott and Angie Stone on the empowering, neo-soul number "Don't Let Them" and sings over an almost-surreal harp melody on "Every Lil' Thing." With CONCRETE ROSE, Ashanti takes on many new musical elements, adding to both her appeal and her artistic depth.
While Ashanti emerged from the fierce world of the Murder Inc. label and has continued to ally herself with Irv Gotti and his posse, she has always possessed a downy softness untouched by the controversy swirling around her circle. As Ashanti explains the title of her third proper studio record, CONCRETE ROSE, it represents her dual existence in the gritty street life of hip-hop and the gentler world of R&B. While hip-hop eases its way into her music, it is not the main driving force (a la Mary J. Blige); with Ashanti, hip-hop is peppered into her music, informing her evocations of desire, hope, and regret.
Prod.By Irv Gotti. Guests: Ja Rule, Lloyd
Personnel: Ashanti (vocals); Ja Rule, T.I., Lloyd, 7 Aurelius (rap vocals); Seven (various instruments); Shawn Smith, Sharod Barnes (guitar); Bill Sample (Hammond b-3 organ); Jerry Barnes (bass instrument).

SHE STILL SOUNDS LIKE SH!T, BECAUSE... HELL NA'! This girl can not sing! She still acts like she's too cute to "SANG"! As a singer myself, when you sing, you're not supposed to strain your voice! Also, she DOES NOT have to ability to vocalize a RUN! A run is when your vocals HAS the ability to go up and down - WITHOUT RUNNING OUT OF BREATH!
Especially when she sings live, whoo, just terrible to the ears! Just listening to the samples was terrible.
JaRule did no justice to being on her album, maybe next time. I guess she'd better stick to the porno she's been doing. Submitted by T. Renne (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Concrete Rose album
$8.49 As a rare female voice in the world of crunk, Ciara is in the unique position to offer a counterpoint to the multitude of hits like Lil Jon's "Get Low" and Petey Pablo's "Freek-a-Leek," which feature men going into clubs and calling out any attractive female. On Ciara's breakout single, "Goodies," the singer coos sultrily--but forcefully--about her independence and how she refuses to be treated like an object, even enlisting the aforementioned Lil Jon and Pablo help out, producing and guest rapping, respectively. It's no wonder "Goodies" was a 2004 summer smash, with its singularly disarming combination of an empowering message backed by an intoxicatingly sexy beat.
Ciara's debut record takes its name and direction from the aforementioned hit, backing up her outstanding single with a slew of aggressive, seductive dance-floor hits cut by sweet ballads (a la Beyonce), ...
| | Trick Daddy Thug Matrimony: Married To The Streets CD (2004)
Concrete Rose CD music
$11.39 In the middle of "I Wanna Sang," Trick Daddy muses about how he "started off with a poem and turned it into a song." The track, off his sixth record, THUG MATRIMONY, is a sweet song of hope akin to Nas's "I Can;" it's infused with a gentleness certainly at odds with Trick Daddy's harsh, thuggish image, but this contrast and complexity is not unusual for the Miami rapper.
Considering his millions of records sold and his crossover airplay, Trick Daddy is sometimes overlooked as an immense talent and deep thinker. THUG MATRIMONY, however, may just be his STANKONIA. Stylistically, the record unfolds in a playful and highly unpredictable manner. Many of the samples are comfortably familiar, but twisted into unusual shapes, as Trick Daddy lets loose his steady, natural flow with ...
| | Destiny's Child Destiny Fulfilled CD (2004)
Concrete Rose music CDs
$6.75 Destiny's Child has been no stranger to controversy, and with three years of silence and three solo records following 2001's SURVIVOR, one might infer that the act was on the fast track to dissolution. The group's fourth record, 2004's DESTINY FULFILLED, put to rest any such ideas, as the now-solid three-woman lineup of Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams offers up another helping of winsome R&B songs marked by a pop sensibility.
DESTINY FULFILLED opens on an energetic, adventurous note with the speedy ...
| | Mind Of Mannie Fresh CD (2004)
Concrete Rose songs
$12.65 On THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, Fresh avails himself admirably as a rapper, layering sweet and often provocative rhymes over a variety of backing tracks of his own conception. On the breakbeat-boasting and Whodini-esque "Nothing Compares to Love" and the Al B. Sure!-interpolating "How We Ride," Fresh reminds the listener he was around in the early days of hip-hop, conjuring up the feel of times past. Mostly, however, Fresh's eyes are squarely ...

| | Alien vs. Predator DVD (2004) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; DTS Sound
Concrete Rose CD music
$10.35 When audiences caught a glimpse of an alien skull mounted in the trophy cabinet of a Predator in the 1990 film PREDATOR 2, it seemed a franchise was about to be born. Sure enough, comic book artists immediately seized on the possibilities suggested by the brief scene, and a number of skirmishes between the deadly foes were played out on the printed page. Fans have had to endure a lengthy wait for a cinematic match-up, but writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson (EVENT HORIZON) has finally delivered the blood-splattered goods in ALIEN VS. PREDATOR. Set in the near future, a team of archaeologists lead by Charles Wiedland (Lance Henriksen, returning for more ALIEN action after appearances in the second and third films) ventures ...

| | Stevie Wonder Original Musiquarium I CDs (1982) Remastered
Concrete Rose songs
$20.89 Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios East).
You can divide Stevie Wonder's career into two basic parts--pre-1971, when he was recording delirious soul singles at Motown's bidding, and post-1971, when he was awarded artistic control and proceeded to make some of the greatest socially-conscious music ever committed to tape, while still keeping up the delirious soul content. ORIGINAL MUSIQUARIUM covers the cream of part two, and is therefore the cream of Stevie Wonder.
It's the rare greatest-hits album that zeroes in on its subject's actual best work with almost surgical focus, and includes new recordings that actually belong there. The new ones include ...
