Ridin' High
$12.59 By the early '80s, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's disco-heavy "jazz" albums, so commercially viable through the previous decade, had already begun losing their hip cachet. Disco itself was on the wane and Ferguson, with his jumpsuits, smoky sunglasses, and obscenely high trumpet playing, was quickly becoming a parody of himself. Thusly, jazz fans in 1982 were generously bequeathed Hollywood, easily one of the ex-Kenton-ite's worst career efforts. Produced by bassist extraordinaire Stanley Clarke (who also supplied the title track), the result is an airbrushed and extroverted pop pastiche of dancefloor-ready songs that have absolutely nothing to do with jazz. Basically, by this point the MF Band was churning out well-produced, if predictable, instrumental versions of pop tunes with little if any improvisation. ...
| | Maynard Ferguson Hot CD (1979) Reissued
Ridin' High
$10.49 Hot could be the absolute worst of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson's '70s recordings. It's not just that it contains more over the top versions of theme songs -- "Rocky II Disco" anyone? -- and generally vomitive dancefloor-ready production, but more to the point, 'ol MF just doesn't sound good. His chops, long overworked by years of obscenely high trumpet squealing, are beginning to let him down. The problem is particularly glaring on the "Gospel John" reworking "Gabriel," in which Ferguson "fracks" and plays out of tune more than once. Beyond his generally tired-sounding performance, the album feels rushed and features a lousy mixed-bag track selection. To these ends, you get the odd faux raga ...
| | Maynard Ferguson Primal Scream CD (1976)
Ridin' High
$10.49 An all-star cast assists Maynard Ferguson in this disco-tinged big-band outing. Ferguson's trademark trumpet playing is featured in all its screaming glory, and Mark Colby contributes a couple of high-energy sax solos. "Primal Scream" and "Invitation" sound as though they were lifted right off the mid-'70s disco dancefloor, complete with T.S.O.P.-type strings and pulsing rhythms. "Pagliacci," too, has the disco beat pounding underneath a Jay Chattaway adaptation of an operatic melody, with Bobby Militello featured on an energetic, ...

| | Nancy Wilson Today, Tomorrow, Forever CD (1964)
Ridin' High
$9.29 Digitally remastered by using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster.
On Today, Tomorrow, Forever, Nancy Wilson lights up a set of the usual mid-'60s pop standards: "One Note Samba," "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," "Wives and Lovers," "Our Day Will Come," and "On Broadway," among others. They're all good choices for her breathy voice and occasional improvisations, especially "One Note Samba" and "Wives and Lovers." On them, Wilson plays with the notes and rhythm, making a pair of lighthearted songs even more playful and irresistible than they had been previously. The arrangements (by her husband, Kenny Dennis) are less reliable, however. Most are sympathetic and unobtrusive (as they should be), but a few are reliant on goofy organ leads that don't quite mesh with Wilson's voice -- and were probably inserted merely for commercial reasons. ...
| | Roger Neumann Instant Heat CD (1993)
Ridin' High
$13.45 It is very surprising that this SeaBreeze CD was Roger Neumann's first release since 1983 for his arrangements are colorful, fairly original and hard-swinging. In addition to all of the charts, he wrote eight of the new set's dozen compositions, plays some fine tenor and is very generous in allocating solo space to his 17 sidemen; in fact every musician (including the six subs) gets at least one chance to be heard. The fresh versions of "Good Bait," "Stompin' At The Savoy," "For Heaven's Sake" and Chick Corea's "Children's Song, No. 2" alternate with ...
