Liner Note Author: David Roy. Much like the other discs in Madacy's surprisingly well-packaged Best of Soul series, Best of Soul 60s balances oft-compiled songs with a handful of less familiar ones. It's also quite skimpy at 12 songs, but there's nary a weak selection ...

Unknown Contributor Roles: Dave Barbour Four; Donn Trenner; Harry Sosnik; Buzz Adiam Orchestra; Janet Waldo; Marty Paich; Page Cavanaugh Trio; The Russell Garcia Orchestra; The Mel-Tones. Arranger: Russell Garcia. Swingin' on the Moon marks a bridge between Mel Tormé's excellent jazzy outings of the 1950s and the generally pop-oriented, novelty recordings of the '60s. Recorded over three days in August 1960, the album contains few standards, substituting instead lesser numbers which all contain the word "moon" in the title (including Tormé's own title song, which opens the set). Though he is in fine voice and the arrangements by Russ Garcia are solid, Tormé just can't come to grips with the lesser material, and the album is quite forgettable. It was released on Verve, which made it a jazz LP in theory, but Swingin' on the Moon can be consigned to the section of pop history which includes novelty "theme" albums arranged around a usually simple subject. This album should not be confused with the LaserLight collection titled Swinging on the Moon. ~ John Bush This unusual project, reissued on CD in 1998, features singer Mel Torme with the Russ Garcia Orchestra performing 11 songs that have the word Moon in their title plus "A Velvet Affair." Although the renditions are quite concise (all are less than four minutes) and a couple of the arrangements use novelty effects, the music is generally quite jazz-oriented. With the exception of Torme's title tune (which deserves to be revived), the songs are all standards including "Moonlight Cocktail," "How High The Moon," "Blue Moon," "No Moon At All" and "Oh, You Crazy Moon." Torme is accompanied by several different ensembles including an orchestra, a group with several strings and one with four trombones. Although not essential, this is a cheerful and enjoyable release by the great Torme. ~ Scott Yanow Re-released on Verve's prestigious Verve By Request ...
