Few have done more in their lifetimes to reinvent the conga and its role than Carlos "Patato" Valdes. His ability to use the conga as an instrument with not only rhythmic but also melodic capabilities is truly revolutionary, and has irreversibly changed the way that congas are played. On his 2004 release, El Hombre, Patato hardly goes four bars playing a simple tumbao (the conga's basic rhythm), constantly underpinning the melody with his four or five drums, tuned to the composition's tonic chord. The record features some truly impressive sidemen, including pianist Edsel Gomez, percussionists Steve Berrios and Marlon Simon, and flutist Dave Valentin, to name a few. The tunes throughout are truly Latin jazz, with complex harmonic and melodic ideas that spring from Afro-Cuban traditions and interact with a truly expressive rhythm section. These are not standards that have been mambo-ized or bop en clave. It is hard to find Latin jazz that does either of those two categories justice. Carlos "Patato" Valdes is an artist who has mastered the free idea exchanges of jazz, and who also owns the Cuban idioms like his native soil. Though there are better examples out there of Valdes' musical genius, El Hombre is a good one, and they're all worthwhile. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez

El Hombre album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful ...

| | John Denver Greatest Hits CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
El Hombre songs
$7.59 Released in 1973, Greatest Hits only sums up a handful of years of hitmaking for John Denver, but what years those were. Between 1971 and 1973, Denver actually didn't have that many hits, but they were songs that defined him -- "Take Me Home, Country Roads," "Rocky Mountain High," and "Sunshine on My Shoulders." Those three songs, along with "Leaving on a Jet Plane" -- which he wrote but Peter, Paul & Mary made into a standard -- are all here, along with seven other early songs recorded between 1969 and 1973 that may not be familiar to the average casual fan, but all capture Denver's warm folk-pop at its best. There may be more hits on Greatest Hits, Vol. 2, but this collection is every bit as engaging as that record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
