Yes return to classic form on THE LADDER, an album that features the kinds of chord changes, technical virtuosity, and vocal harmonies that brought the band to prominence. Bruce Fairbairn (Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Cranberries), who passed away in May, 1999, made his last production job a memorable one.
Billy Sherwood and Igor Khoroshev join the classic lineup of Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, and Alan White. "Homeworld (The Ladder)" is a 9-minute opus that changes from straight-ahead rock to a piano melody, and is reminiscent of the band's early-'70s progressive work. "Lightning Strikes" has a ska feel to it, while "Can I?" is a world music reworking of the band's own "We Have Heaven." "Face To Face" is a fantastic classic rock tune, and "If You Only Knew" is a wonderfully commercial ballad. Like the title track, "New Language" is another epic track featuring the keyboard talents of Mr. Khoroshev. Yes is a band that recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and has never stopped experimenting. THE LADDER is proof of this, with the group sounding as fresh as ever.

Ladder Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) This is a good one This one is more of the style of Yes that's similar to the earlier Yes, but shorter song length. It's not the Trevor Horn big loud guitar sound, it's more of the Jon Anderson influenced direction he took the band back on after Horn left. I like it, it's not a great one, but it is a quality Yes record to add to your collection, play when you're in a Yes mood, and you won't be disappointed with Anderson's clever arrangements and the unique Yes progressive rock music we love. I listen to it both as background music and for focused listening as good Yes music for musical pleasure. Submitted by Andrew M. (Santa Rosa, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
This is good for a later album Sometimes bands aren't as good the time passes because of personnel changes etc. but these guys still sound GREAT. It reminds alot of the Yes Album. Submitted by Ann (Oshkosh, WI USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A surprise! This album really surprised me. It was much better than expected. Rick Wakeman is missing , but Igor Koroshev is a good substitution. Yes ,on the way ,in right direction. Submitted by joedega2 (norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Missed One No one got this. I ordered it with those buy one get 3 free. WOW. Reminds me of between the "YES" album and "Fragile". Love it. I am now on the "remastered" CD replacement thing. LP, CD. "Remastered" CD. I love using this CD for Car Audio tests.

Jon Anderson Band Very disappointing. The songs all sound way too thought out and over-produced. This one should have been called The Jon Anderson Band. There is no magic in this CD at all - the music is bland, predictable and dull, like a bunch of studio musicians. Previous efforts like Open Your Eyes and Union at least had flashes of true Yes. The Ladder has none.
I bought the CD and have played it once (as opposed to Relayer, Close to the Edge, Fragile, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Drama, 90125, Big Generator, Talk, The Yes Album, Going For the One and Tormato -yes, Tormato!-, which I listen to regularly.) $7.15 It was widely assumed that when vocalist/songwriter Jon Anderson left Yes at the end of the '70s, the band was doomed. Most folks forgot that bassist/composer Chris Squire was the other founding member of the band, and he had as much to do with their sound as Anderson. It was surprising enough when the band decided to continue with a new vocalist and keyboardist. It was even more surprising when the new members turned out to be Trevor Horn (later a famed pop producer) and Geoff Downes (who would soon depart with Steve Howe for Asia). And it was downright shocking when the resultant album DRAMA turned out to be a great one.
While Horn's voice is in the same general range as Anderson's, he tends to blend ...
