| | Slaughter Extended Versions CD Slaughter Discography of CDs
Few hair metal bands were as bombastic as Slaughter -- their overdubbed backing vocals brought to mind Queen, Mark Slaughter's vocals were obviously patterned after Robert Plant, and their musical role model was Def Leppard. All of these elements are on display on the Slaughter edition of the budget-priced Extended Versions series. Comprised of ten live tracks, the set does a good job of covering favorites from early in the band's career, as their two biggest hits are included -- the party anthem "Up All Night" and a power ballad so Zeppelin-esque that it probably made Kingdom Come green with envy, "Fly to the Angels." But there's one tiny problem here -- longtime fans will probably be left longing for a complete live set, while newcomers will be looking for a more extensive set of the better-known studio versions. ~ Greg Prato Extended Versions Review

| | Michael Franks Abandoned Garden CD (1995)
Extended Versions
$6.09 Michael Franks dedicated this album to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but it's neither Franks' best effort nor particularly evocative of the great Brazilian composer. There is not an especially strong Brazilian influence on the disc, despite the presence of Eliane Elias. In fact, there's a host of heavy hitters on board, including the Yellowjackets, Peter Erskine, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Art Farmer, Marc Johnson, Bob Mintzer, Michael Brecker, and many, many others. But while the revolving door of stars has served Franks well on other recordings, here they don't seem to add up to much. ~ Ross Boissoneau

| | Kathy Mattea Love Travels CD (1997)
Extended Versions
$9.79 Mattea is a tasteful, thoughtful singer who uses country music as a means to an end. Her music is not so much rooted in the country tradition as it is a by-product of it. Mattea's roots are more James Taylor than George Jones, and while steel guitars and 2/4 rhythms abound, LOVE TRAVELS is more an album of stylized Nashville folk-pop than neo-country.
To flesh out her introspective vision, Mattea reaches beyond the usual stable of Nashville songwriters to include songs by some honest-to-god singer-songwriter types. Gillian Welch contributes "Patiently Waiting" and "455 Rocket," and they show Welch to be capable of writing outside her own trad-country performance style. Jim Lauderdale's "I'm On Your Side," an unsentimental oath of loyalty, is one of the album's highlights. Janis Ian's moody, minor-key "All Roads ...

| | Sadus Out For Blood CD (2006)
Extended Versions
$5.55 Quite possibly the only death metal/thrash band whose audience consists primarily of bass players, Sadus will likely carry on re-forming every decade or so to record albums like 2006's Out for Blood (their first in nine years); just as long as four-string colossus Steve DiGiorgio can still pluck the dickens out of his generally overlooked instrument. Standard, five-string, fretless, heck, neck-less, you name it -- he can play it, and he does so at a higher level than most anyone ever has in extreme metal. The point of all this discourse being that, although Out for Blood features virtually the same "classic" lineup (minus second guitarist Rob Moore) that recorded Sadus' influential early albums, one would be silly not to recognize that this is now, unquestionably, the Steve DiGiorgio show. Hear the dazzling flurries of bass notes driving most every composition, including the hyperactive "Crazy" and frenzied title cut; behold the Eastern-sounding bass melodies prefacing "Smackdown"; and, perhaps most telling of DiGiorgio's role of maximum authority, check out the unexpected displays of his newfound synthesizer hobby. Not that there's anything wrong with the added dimension this brings to tracks like "No More" and "Lost It All," but original fans will ...
| | Metal Church Light In The Dark CD (2006) Bonus Track

Being the only original member left in attendance by this point, Vanderhoof knows exactly what Metal Church fans look for in each release, and on their ninth release overall, the group plays largely by the rules. Despite the absence of familiar faces, ...
