the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working in 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on "blue babies," Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart. Director: Joseph Sargent. Based on a true story, SOMETHING THE LORD MADE tells the absorbing tale of two doctors who bucked tradition and racial prejudice to revolutionize the medical world. The American south in the 1940s could be a fearsome place for anyone attempting to ply a well-meaning trade, as it was riddled with strictly-enforced racial boundaries. The two men in question--Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and African-American lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def)--work fastidiously on a new technique for helping babies with heart problems, and achieve some impressive, and innovative results. Under any other circumstances the men would have been exhilarated by their advances, and widely applauded throughout the medical profession. But the dark heart of the south causes innumerable problems for the brave pioneers, as the prejudices brought to bear on the men become unbearable. Moving and dramatic in equal measures, director Joseph Sargent's film is a bold retelling of a vital chapter in the history of the medical profession. Something The Lord Made Movie Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) Wow... im only 13 yrs old and i really enjoyed this movie in my medical class. It really depicts the real life of Vivien Thomas in the "early days". It's a wonderful movie. Submitted by switchfootbabi (Miami, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 7 of 7 found this helpful.
African Americans MUST see this film!!! And so should ALL Americans! This vital (not exaggerating) piece of Black history was thoughtlessly left out of history books. After watching it, I didn't know whether to cheer my head off for learning of Vivien Thomas' accomplishments...or to punch a hole in the wall out of anger for not hearing this story before. And don't let the fact that a rap star is playing the lead role drive you away. Mos Def will convince you he is a medically-gifted young man struggling to turn his unique ideas into a reality. A very touching story as well. Submitted by Rich Green (Kansas City, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Mos Def's performance is Awesome! This movie is wonderful, the acting is superb. Mos Def was very convencing as Vivien Thomas. Wow, I never knew until I saw this movie last year that Vivien Thomas even existed. You have to know, only the God of Heaven and Earth can take a mere man, and give him the talent and skill he needs to do what this man did. He never even went to college. He trained people who did. Its to bad he never really got the credit he should have. Praise God for Vivien Thomas. Submitted by debbiec (Los Angeles, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
HBO Films Produced A Gem! Excellent movie in all ways. Both Mos Def and Alan Rickman deliver A+ performances. This true story could not have been done better on film. Submitted by reviewer (Charlotte, NC US) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
