| | Loreena McKennitt A Mediterranean Odyssey CDs (2009)
Brazilbossa 'N' Bass CD music
$19.29 Loreena McKennitt's A MEDITERRANEAN ODYSSEY collection includes an 11-track anthology of her more Mediterranean-influenced works entitled OLIVE AND THE CEDAR, as well as a ten-track live performance recorded in 2009 called FROM ISTANBUL TO ATHENS. McKennitt's transition from Celtic balladeer to worldbeat superstar began in the early '90s with the genre-hopping VISIT. Her penchant for Mediterranean/Far East/Middle Eastern instrumentation came to fruition on 1994's MASK AND MIRROR and 1997's BOOK OF SECRETS, the latter of which spawned her biggest commercial hit "The Mummer's Dance." The bulk of OLIVE AND THE CEDARis made up of material from those three albums. FROM ISTANBUL TO ATHENS mines much of the same material, but draws more heavily from 2006's ANCIENT MUSE

Personnel: Loreena McKennitt (vocals, harp, accordion, piano, keyboards); Ben Grossman (hurdy-gurdy, triangle, percussion); Hugh Marsh (violin); Caroline LaVelle (cello).

| | Odetta At Town Hall CD (1962)
$9.55 Having begun her career on the coffeehouse circuit in the '50s, singer-guitarist Odetta Gordon was always at her best in front of an appreciative audience, and this 16-track, 52-minute album recorded at New York City's Town Hall in late 1962 is among the highlights in her long career.
Backed only by her own acoustic guitar and the solid yet unobtrusive bass work of Bill Lee--filmmaker Spike Lee's father--Odetta performs folk standards, blues classics, work songs, and spirituals, all with a quiet, proud reserve rather akin to that of Paul Robeson. While there's a playful undertone to a couple of the blues tunes, the stirring passion of the set's pointed closer, "Freedom Trilogy," reminds listeners of the strong ties between the collegiate folk revival of the early '60s and the concurrent civil rights movement. While never stridently political, the songs on ODETTA AT TOWN HALL definitely get their point across.
Includes original release liner notes by Maynard Solomon.
Personnel: Odetta (vocals, guitar); Bill Lee (acoustic bass).
| | Superchunk Come Pick Me Up CD (1999)
$12.79 Superchunk's ninth full-length disc is easily the most melodic, catchy, and fun disc of the band's career. Perhaps Superchunk is feeling celebratory as a result of the 10-year anniversary of its record label, Merge Records. But regardless of what inspired it, COME PICK ME UP is an unbridled onslaught of hooks and infectious phrases. Produced by Jim O'Rourke (Gastr Del Sol), this disc offers some subtle alterations to the Superchunk recipe. While some songs flaunt string and horn sections, other tracks feature a lighter, friendlier version of Mac McCaughan's endearing squeal. Instead of screaming out the high notes in his trademark fashion, McCaughan instead sings them in a gentle falsetto. It's a wonderful, rousing disc from America's flagship indie band.
Recorded at Electrical Audio Studios, Chicago, Illinois.
Personnel: Jim O'Rourke (vocals, guitar, recorder); Mac McCaughan (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jim Wilbur (vocals, guitar); Jon Wurster (vocals, drums, percussion); Laura Ballance (vocals); Suzanne Roberts (violin); Frederick Lonberg-Holm (cello); Ken Vandermark (saxophone); Bob Weston (trumpet); Jeb Bishop (trombone); Chris Manfrin (hand claps).

$18.15 A dark and powerful statement of life in a Cold War climate is explored through traditional Hungarian songs and instruments. Marta Sebestyen's amazingly evocative voice connects with the medieval sound of the hurdy gurdy and the sting of Mihaly Sipos's Gypsy violin. ~ Bob Tarte
Personnel includes: Muzsikas, Marta Sebestyen.
| | Nic Endo Cold Metal Perfection CD (2001)
$13.39 As one-fourth of the rabble-rousing Atari Teenage Riot, Nic Endo has learned more than her fair share about the politics and pleasures of an all-out sonic assault. On her solo debut, however, Germany's Endo keeps eardrums intact as she creates a more subtly sinister electronic soundscape than her more famous noise punk outfit. The aptly titled Cold Metal Perfection feels distant, cold, and detached -- which doesn't mean it's uninspired, exactly -- as Endo sounds like she's scoring a low-budget horror film with a minimalist mix of metallic beats, noise, synths, and the occasional vocal sample. And while several songs lack a clear focus, the album has truly compelling moments, as on "Man-Eater" and "I Didn't Exist," which chillingly samples a woman confessing that she has "no desire for the close company of other people." It's the closest the album comes to making the sort of blatant social and political statement that's often associated with members of ATR (see: Hanin Elias' grueling and brilliant In Flames), however, and so Cold Metal Perfection doesn't exactly sound like the revolution fans may expect. ~ Jimmy Draper
