Chester "Howlin' Wolf'" Burnett's razor-like voice was one of the signature sounds of post-war Chicago electric blues, and the three-disc CHESS BOX is the definitive document of his landmark recordings for the label that the Chess brothers made into the ultimate conduit for classic Chicago blues. Though coming from similar stylistic roots to his contemporary Muddy Waters, the Wolf had more of an edge to his sound. Where Muddy came across as a confident, ...
| | Larry Adler I Got Rhythm CD (2001)
Sessions From The Vault Vol. 1: John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Michigan & Smiley review
$16.25 Harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler spent most of his time in England and Europe during the 1930s. Like Living Era's Maestro of the Mouth Organ, Pearl Flapper's I Got Rhythm focuses upon the recordings he made between December 1934 and May 1938. The harmonica was already prevalent in the blues during the late '20s and early '30s, as documented in recordings by such mouth harp masters as Noah Lewis, Freeman Stowers and Jaybird Coleman. Before Adler, the instrument had made only a few modest inroads into the jazz world. One famous example is Roy Smeck's homey harmonica solo during King Oliver's December 1929 recording of "Frankie ...

| | Jesse Dangerously Verba Volant CD (2007)
Sessions From The Vault Vol. 1: John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Michigan & Smiley movie DVD
$13.15 Nova Scotian indie rap stalwart Jesse Dangerously returns once again with a new record of ear-baffling raps, Verba Volant, featuring just all kinds of slamming beats and adroit guest raps from Canada's indomitable Backburner crew... and a few other friends!Although the album's ten tracks feature vocal appearances from Johnny Hardcore (Newfoundland), ginzuintriplicate (Dartmouth/Osaka), Toolshed (London, ON), Don Brownrigg (Newfoundland again!), Rez Villain (Membertou, Cape Breton), Wordburglar (Halifax), Apt (Halifax) and More or Les (Toronto), as well as scratches from Uncle Fester, the guests are concentrated onto four songs of reasonable lengths and with the scratch intro, the remaining five tracks are all Jesse! New raps and new rap styles, more intelligible than ever (or have you just gotten used to him?) and yet his tempos more dynamic than ever as well. Some of the raps are almost slow, but the title of this album is Verba Volant, meaning "words fly" in Latin, and the main thing is they certainly do when Jesse D's commanding them. Also there is a song with feelings.Keeping in tradition with the previous Inter Alia EP, the beats are provided half and half by two of Jesse's Backburner posse-mates: Fresh Kils, who has also produced tracks for Aristo, Spesh K, ...
