Next to Coldplay, no other band was as successful in disseminating post-Britpop in the early 2000s as the Scottish four-piece Travis. Ironically, starting out as a neo-trad rock outfit on its 1997 debut album, Good Feeling, the band soon experienced a kind of soft rock epiphany and by its 1999 follow-up, The Man Who, was pursuing a decidedly more low-key acoustic sound. Centered around the delicately sanguine vocals of Fran Healy, Travis found radio-friendly currency with such melancholy anthems as "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?," "Sing," and "Flowers in the Window." However, despite a knack for catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrical sentiments, Travis albums often have a "samey" quality, which makes Singles such a pleasant addition to the band's catalog. Featuring every one of Travis' singles -- including the aforementioned hits -- as well as a new cut, Singles works as a great introduction to the band, hitting all the high points while avoiding any mid-album filler. Of course, some memorable album tracks like "Safe" can't technically be included here, and fans will have to wait for the inevitable "best-of" disc for a more complete Travis picture. Until then, Singles will do just fine, thanks. ~ Matt Collar When Travis burst onto the American scene in 2000 with the ubiquitous "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?," most Stateside listeners assumed that the Scottish foursome was a proverbial overnight sensation. In fact, the group had been making the scene in the UK for nearly five years, garnering rabid media attention and racking up an impressive string of hits. SINGLES sets the record straight, collecting many of the band's most popular works and adding "Walking in the Sun," a newly recorded track. Of course, fans have always championed Travis's tuneful mix of 1970s-inspired singer/songwriter rock and emotive modern pop of the Jeff Buckley/Radiohead variety. Less angst-ridden than either of the aforementioned acts, the band's gently strummed acoustic guitars and smooth vocals often recall Bread with a tougher rhythm section and a dose of Fleetwood Mac's dark California poetry. In addition, the singles' sweeping production style imbues the music with a deep melancholy reminiscent of '60s folk rock. SINGLES ably compiles many of Travis's finest recorded moments, serving as a perfect introduction for US listeners. | | Zac Brown Foundation CD (2008)
Singles
$12.55 On 2008's THE FOUNDATION, singer/guitarist Zac Brown leads his ensemble on a vibrant set of country-rock. While the Georgia-based performer is clearly comfortable with ballads (see his emotive cover of Ray LaMontagne's "Jolene"), he seems most at home on twangy, carefree tracks such as "Toes," "Chicken Fried," and "Sic `Em on a Chicken." Now that Jimmy Buffett has tried repositioning himself as a country artist by cutting duets with the likes of Alan Jackson, Kenny Chesney and Clint Black, it should come as no surprise that the Parrothead influence has begun making its way into Nashville, and the first major-label effort from Zac Brown features not one but two songs ("Toes" and "Where the Boat Leaves From") devoted to the joys of getting buzzed and playing music in some seaside locale with good weather. Seeing how most of the great names of country's formative era rarely if ever sang about vacationing (beyond spending the odd night in a honky-tonk), this is an interesting and somewhat puzzling development, ...
| | Rush Working Men CD (2009)
Singles
$14.54 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee is utterly uncanny, the anticipation and the willingness to add flourishes and to challenge one another in the bridges ...

Singles
$15.65 Lyricist: Dave Mustaine. Personnel: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, piano); Chris Broderick (guitar, acoustic guitar); James LoMenzo (bass guitar); Shawn Drover (drums, percussion); Chris Rodriguez, Chris Clancy (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Andy Sneap. Illustrator: John Lorenzi. Photographer: Ross Halfin. The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next ...

$13.49 For the past year, intervision has single-handedly created a groove epidemic in their hometown of Portland, OR. Combining elements of soul, rock, jazz and pop, the quintet is earning lofty comparisons to bands like Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, and Jamiroquai and yet have created their own intensely unique sound. From their roots as young music students at Clackamas Community College through their rise to being one of the city’s most popular groups, the band has enjoyed distinguished performances at the Bite of Oregon A&E Mainstage, Musicfest NW, The Aladdin Theatre, and have also become a fixture on local television like KATU’s AM Northwest and Comcast's PDXposed.intervision had the distinguished honor of opening for the platinum selling pop/rock act Lifehouse, have received consistent circulation on Live 365 Pop-Up Radio, airplay on KINK FM 101.9, KNRK 94.7, 105.1 FM The Buzz, and heavy rotation on local university stations. The band has received considerable support from KINK as they were featured on KINK’s Noontunes at Pioneer Courthouse Square in the summer of 2006 and 2007, and they were asked to play the KINK Early Escape Cruises for the last three years. The Oregonian writes the following about InterVisions debut album. “It’s a sweet listen. Lyrics tug at the heart from everyday moments, while pure vocals steer melodies over engaging rhythms.” The album "Inside" demonstrates to listeners that the band has honed a sophisticated sound not easily squeezed into any particular genre.Led by the undeniably soulful tenor of lead vocalist Paul Creighton, each member of the band asserts a distinct musical personality that has added to their unique style. While Creighton’s sound invokes Stevie Wonder, ...
