This down-tempo collection of Willie Nelson love-gone-wrong classics features tracks recorded as publishers' demos, as well as songs that Nelson recorded for the Liberty label in the early 1960s, in an ultimately futile quest to make it as a solo artist in Nashville. The stripped down, primitive quality of many of these recordings naturally accentuates Nelson's quirky phrasing and attractively weathered voice, focusing attention on the songs, which include the aching title track, the regretful "Will You Remember Mine," and the sentimental "Home Is Where You're Happy."
Face of a Fighter was originally recorded in 1960 in Nash Vegas but went unreleased until 1978 when it was issued on Willie Nelson's own Lone Star label. This compilation on the Synergy Entertainment label may have the same title but it is a different recording -- though it contains seven of that original album's ten tracks and adds seven more from the early '60s. Because of its modest price point, some may consider this just a superfluous filler item, but that's just plain wrong. Synergy has employed Post Haste Sound and remastered each cut painstakingly and the sound is warm and full. Countryman was first brainstormed by Don Was and Chris Blackwell way back in 1995 and was originally intended for release on Blackwell's Island Records.
