When Josh Scogin left his position as lead singer for the alternative metal band Norma Jean in 2002, fans wondered where he would eventually end up. The answer is Scogin's own band the Chariot, who offer a truly ferocious dose of metalcore on their debut album, Everything Is Alive, Everything Is Breathing, Nothing Is Dead and Nothing Is Bleeding. Musically, no prisoners are taken on this 2004 release; Scogin and his equally unforgiving colleagues favor the sort of harshness, brutality and suffocating density that metalcore is known for. An exercise in sensory assault for the sake of sensory assault, this 27-minute CD sounds like the soundtrack to hell. Ah, but here's the punchline: The Chariot, like Norma Jean, is a Christian band -- and this album's lyrics, for all their angst, are meant to be uplifting rather than nihilistic. Some will ask, "How can a band that sounds so brutal be promoting spirituality?" But truth be told, there is nothing in the Bible, the Holy Koran or the Bhagavad-Gita that specifies what a religious band has to sound like -- and if a band wants to use metalcore to promote Christianity, Judaism, Islam or Buddhism (in the Chariot's case, Christianity), there is no reason not to. The Chariot's stream-of-consciousness lyrics are not preachy; rather, Scogin takes a painful look at the world around him and concludes that Christianity is the remedy. Most of the time, Scogin screams in English, but he detours into some Spanish lyrics on "Yellow Dress, Locked Knees," declaring, "Jesus, yo quiero que este mundo te conosca." Translation: Jesus, I want this world to know you. But because this album is so bonecrushing musically, one has to pay very close attention to pick up the Christian references. An above-average contribution to metalcore, Everything Is Alive demonstrates that Christian headbangers can be every bit as bombastic as their secular counterparts. ~ Alex Henderson

Amazing! okay, ill admit it, the first time i listened to this cd i just thought it was okay... but the more you listen to it the more you love it.
Josh is as amazing as ever and the chaos is perfect for him. i think this is his perfect band... in my opinion norma jean held him back from his full potential. Submitted by catchingfallingstars92 (Brodheadsville, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Loved It! This really is a great cd, from the vocals to drum tracks, everything is put together very well. Loved It, what else can I say. Submitted by Christianrocklovr (Mission, KS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Needs a lot of work This CD just isn't very good at all. Josh is an awesome guy and his vocals are WAY better than they used to be, but the songs on this CD are rather boring. They sound too forced and unnatural. It sounds as if the band hasn't yet melded together into one unit. The production on this CD is honestly horrible. I think that Chariot will definitely get better. The potential is there, and the sound is leaning towards a more aggressive metal. I'll definitely keep an eye on these guys and be awaiting their future releases. I'm not giving up on Chariot yet, but I don't recommend this CD - I say be patient and wait for what's next. ~~ Submitted by TheRant (Douglasville, GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Everything Is Alive album
$5.99 Principally recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Legs McNeil and Arturo Vega.
Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep).
The third of the Ramones' original quartet of albums, 1977's ROCKET TO RUSSIA is actually a big improvement over the slightly disappointing LEAVE HOME, released earlier in 1977. While not as solidly perfect as RAMONES, ROCKET TO RUSSIA contains very little fat and boasts possibly the finest songs in the band's entire repertoire, "Rockaway Beach" and the immortal "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." "We're a Happy Family" and "Teenage Lobotomy" are only slightly lesser tracks, and the covers of the Trashmen's gloriously silly "Surfin' Bird" and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance" are conceptually perfect, linking the Ramones neatly with their garage rock and bubblegum roots.
The bonus tracks on the 2001 Rhino reissue are less revelatory than the 1976 concert contained on the LEAVE HOME reissue, a motley but entertaining collection of demos, single mixes ...
| | Norma Jean Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child CD (2002)
Everything Is Alive CD music
$13.49 Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child is the first outing since Luti-Kriss adopted the new name Norma Jean, due to constant confusion from certain venues who believed the band was the hip-hop MC Ludacris. While the band's old material showed great promise, few could have expected such a ferocious follow-up, as this is an album that can be described simply as audio chaos. Norma Jean follows no rhyme or reason, and bludgeons the listener with repeated blasts of macabre hardcore/metal that are as confusing as they are cataclysmic. While few bands could pull off placing a 15-plus-minute track in the center of an album, Norma Jean dares to be different, and manages to place "Pretty Soon, I Don't Know What, but Something Is Going to Happen" effectively ...

$10.69 Is it possible for a band to list the same influences as progressive metallists Dream Theater (Yes, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc.), as well as bands from the complete opposite end of the rock spectrum, like Nirvana? The Mukilteo, WA, trio Fall of Troy proves that it can indeed be done on their sophomore full-length, 2005's Doppelgänger. It's obvious from the get-go that the chaps -- all of whom are either still teenaged or barely in their twenties -- have obviously logged significant amounts of time "familiarizing" themselves with their instruments (in other words, long hours in their bedrooms shredding away), and melodic emocore ...
