| | Thoroughly Modern Millie DVD (1967) Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled
Cinderella review
$10.25 This characteristically spectacular Ross Hunter musical production, a parody of the films of the 1920s, stars Julie Andrews as the eager young Millie Dillmount. She arrives in New York City in the 1920s intent on a job as a secretary with a rich, handsome, eligible boss. Deciding to adopt the appearance of a flapper, she has her hair bobbed. At a women's hotel run by Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), who also runs a white slavery ring, she meets the beautiful, naive Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore). Millie does get a job with a handsome boss, Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), but he has eyes only for Miss Dorothy, and Millie is forced to make do with Jimmy Smith (James Fox), a paper-clip salesman. After they've returned to the hotel from attending a party at the Long Island estate of wealthy Muzzy van Hossmere (Carol Channing), Millie finds that Miss Dorothy has disappeared. When she and Jimmy detect the scent of opium in Mrs. Meers's room, they realize she has a sideline. The valiant Jimmy must go in drag to uncover the whereabouts of the white slavers' hideout. The cast and crew perform admirably in this light farce that is almost too sweet for its own good.

| | Murphy's Romance DVD (1985) Widescreen
Cinderella film
$5.69 A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film romances, it becomes clear from their first meeting that the director, Martin Ritt, is more interested in his carefully observed setting, and in the comic flirtations between Murphy and Emma flirtations, than in making a conventional picture. In fact, some of the film's strongest comic scenes occur when the locals show off their color, including a hilarious sequence during a bingo game that showcases the amazing support cast. Of course, there is some drama and confrontation, but the focus remains on the setting and the relationship ...
| | Deliverance DVD (1972) Widescreen
Cinderella review
$8.95 Director John Boorman's harrowing adaptation of James Dickey's best-selling novel is a nightmarish descent into backwoods Americana. When four unsuspecting urbanites head into the mountains of northern Georgia for a weekend canoe trip, they have no idea what's in store for them. The group's macho leader, Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds), is driven by Hemingway-esque notions of man's ability to conquer nature, while his three friends--Bobby Trippe (Ned Beatty), Drew Ballinger (Ronny Cox), and Ed Gentry (Jon Voight)--aren't so sure. As the men begin to navigate their way down the precarious rapids, they discover that nature isn't the only one out to get them. The eventual appearance of two menacing hillbillies turns the vacation into an all-out nightmare.
Photographed by the great Vilmos Zsigmond (MCCABE & MRS. MILLER, THE DEER HUNTER), DELIVERANCE is a compelling meditation on the dangers of masculine ritual. Reynolds dives headlong into the role that would make him a superstar, as does Beatty, whose legendary big-screen debut will never be ...
| | Friends Forever DVD (2001)
Cinderella DVD
$20.25 A documentary film about a band that never plays inside a club, only in their ramshackle VW bus in parking lots or on a curbside, FRIENDS FOREVER is a startling look at the eponymous rock duo who travel the country in search of the perfect parking spot. With only a lighting girl named Jen and three dogs, Nate and Josh play guerilla style rock shows that sometimes last no more than 15 minutes and inevitably consist of what they describe as "the worst music ever made". Absurd and hilarious, FRIENDS FOREVER is an entertaining look at two men on a mission to save rock.
Friends Forever (the band) never plays inside rock clubs. Instead, they play inside their van outside the club, to stunned bystanders. Nate (drums), Josh (guitar), Jen (lighting) and their three dogs don't think twice about traveling thousands of miles across the country to play one 15-minute show in a loading zone. FRIENDS FOREVER (the documentary) captures their smoke-spewing, generator-powered rock world, and the tour that has them crisscrossing the U.S. in search ...
