On their third album, 2009's Midnight Soul Serenade, Heavy Trash keep delivering the good old rock & roll, rockabilly, and hillbilly soul that their first two albums handed out like candy at a Fourth of July parade. Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray hit their stride right away on their debut and continue to be nothing short of great. They make no great changes to their sound here; it's still loose as geese on the rockers and pleasantly spooky on the ballads. Spencer and Verta-Ray still conjure all kinds of unhinged noise from the guitars, yet remain firmly within the bounds of the songs. Best of all, Spencer fully embraces his role as greasy, rockabilly crooner with an unrestrained joy and fervor. His ...

In the chorus of Pet Grief's lead single and catchiest song, Radio Dept. head Johan Duncanson makes the touching if rather petty confession that the only reason he's able to withstand his jealous despair is the knowledge that his would-be romantic rival has "the worst taste in music." Well, if it makes him feel better, there's certainly no doubting his and his bandmates' taste -- like their buzzy, buzzed-about debut, Pet Grief evinces an impeccably fashionable roll call of ...

Allman Brothers Band Instant Live: Alltel Pavilion At Walnut Creek - Raleigh, NC 8/10/03 CDs  (2004)

Audio Precision
CD $21.35  5 stars
The final evening of their 2003 summer tour found the Allman Brothers planning a special night on the friendly turf of Raleigh, NC, wrapping up yet another road trip with invitations to Susan Tedeschi, Karl Denson, and truly serious jazzbo Branford Marsalis to join the group on-stage. It was all captured by the state-of-the-digital-arts folks at Instant Live, who burn CDs of the shows and make them available to concertgoers who still have a few extra green ones in their pockets by evening's end. On the sprawling three-CD set documenting these particular proceedings, there is indeed some fine music, although in his Allmans premiere appearance Marsalis doesn't fare as well as jam band-friendly Denson; the sax-blowing Marsalis brother (heard on "Dreams" and "Whipping Post") seems shoehorned between the guitars and strains a bit over the loud rock groove. Elsewhere, Gregg Allman is in fine voice, particularly on the slower numbers like the stellar read of "Gambler's Roll" from Seven Turns and the world-weary "Old Before My Time"; Derek Trucks is indeed a wunderkind as advertised; Oteil Burbridge is the most proficient bassist the band has ever had; the drum section remains a powerhouse; and Warren Haynes knocks the ball out of the park with a "Whipping Post" solo that seemingly condenses and channels the classic Fillmore East showcases of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, while including a few patented licks of his own. The cover tunes are nice surprises, too, particularly Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic," with its heartfelt Haynes vocal. Disc two is dominated by a nearly 40-minute version of Hittin' the Note's "Instrumental Illness," the longest mega-track one might find on an Allmans disc this side of "Mountain Jam." And while the Grammy-nominated "Illness" is indeed a very good late-era Allmans instrumental track, with jazzy, boppish rhythms and some engaging compositional twists and turns, its humongous length here is not due to full-band improvisational interplay ...

‘Ready Your Grins to the Sky,’ the Imp Says
Four weary, faceless travelers each stumble over a root, fall into a hole, are trapped inside that hole in a long moment of happenstance. What immerges from out of that hole is called Antique Imp. Some would describe Antique Imp’s music as “folky.” Others might deem it “eerie” or “psychedelic” or “stoner-friendly.” The Imps wouldn’t refute any of this. Their music is an open slot, a blank space waiting to be filled in by the listener, steered by whatever impressions their sounds might stir. Because the truth is, there is no easy way to categorize Antique Imp’s music. Sure, those listening for it will find traces of Syd Barrett or Grizzly Bear or the ethereal wanderings of an in-his-element Brian Eno, but when all is said and done, Antique Imp stands on its own two scuffed feet. The EP was recorded in the latter months of 2008. The drums were laid down at the renowned Private Island Trax studio (familiar to artists such as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Warren Zevon, Lou Rawls and many more) in Los Angeles, right there on the Sunset Strip with all the worn and wasted and jaded straggling by. As for the rest of the music, this was done in the comfort of singer/songwriter Danny Fasold’s Hollywood apartment on a laptop connected to many wires connected to many instruments. Known for their use of swooping choruses, woodsy guitars and molasses-thick synthesizers, Antique Imp’s music thrives on mood. It’s both relaxing and suspenseful, aesthetic and horrid, depressing and uplifting. In only four songs, the band’s eponymous EP covers much ground, touching on isolation, nostalgia, longing and, finally, the boundless potential that exists in all of us. Antique Imp is not afraid to cross boundaries. It is not afraid to venture into the dark, or look deep inside itself. It wants you to not be afraid as well. About Antique Imp Deep ...
