Soundtrack English; Dolby Digital 5.1 Re Unfolding with the speed and rhythm of an action movie and showcasing stylistic flourishes that hint at Quentin Tarantino, STANDER takes on one of history's most infamous injustices with a surprising amount of humor and vivacity. Set in 1976, the film tells the true story of Andre Stander, a young police captain in Johannesburg, South Africa. His apex of official power coincided with the pinnacle of the devastating policies of apartheid. As the movie illustrates in an evocative and pivotal scene, Stander's view of his society and position within it is profoundly shaken when he kills an unarmed black man during a chaotic anti-apartheid riot. Aware that he lives in a society so devastatingly racist that he is free to murder without consequence, Stander stages an unconventional political protest by robbing banks. As he becomes more and more successful at maintaining a double life as a criminal-cop, his addiction to the thrills and accoutrements of the outlaw lifestyle begin to overshadow any political purpose.
Director Bronwen Hughes (best known for helming studio flicks FORCES OF NATURE and HARRIET THE SPY) has skillfully woven together elements of a political tract, character study, and heist movie to a unified and compelling whole. But the movie belongs to its star, Thomas Jane, who seems to dissolve into his complex role, making Stander an irresistibly contradictory antihero. IN THEATRES: AUGUST 6, 2004
Stander Reviews: "[A] cross between GOODFELLAS, CITY OF GOD and Michael Mann's THIEF, with a jumping David Holmes score and a career-making turn from Jane....STANDER absolutely rocks."
-- Chris Roberts, Uncut "[T]he film's energy and zip keep it consistently watchable..."-- Philip Kemp, Sight and Sound "Directed by Bronwen Hughes with striking verve, STANDER efficiently conveys the anarchic ironies of the situation..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "The film does an impressive job of dramatizing the brutality of the apartheid era..."
-- Stephen Farber, Movieline's Hollywood Life

South Africa, it was such a chill country. Stander turns up the heat but keeeps the chill. U gotta love the vibe of this film, its a bit alternative, not violent but has all the entertainment value of violence. far better than crap like 'heat' with De niro. see it! brilliant becuse its simple the look and feel of the movie is great. its what south africa was in the 80's- a beautiful country with beautiful people robbed by an awful system of oppression. stander's appeal is that it plays out that sentiment brilliantly and balances good against evil. you know he is wrong but you root for him all the way. the emphasis is not on the crime or violence but the sebtiment. A must see! Submitted by ashfaq ismail (lenasia, South Africa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Good film for people who like to think This is a great film with a viewpoint that isn't in the cut and paste cookie, cutter mold. Worth checking out. Submitted by Jerry (Richmond, VA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Terrible Tell me something. How can you take Tom Jane, who was an excellent actor in the Punisher and was involved in a kill-this kill-that bloodbath in that movie to this crap? COME ON!! Where's the blood? Where's the people screaming when he robs the banks? Where's the gunfights? I admit there were a couple of gun scenes, but they both sucked. I understand this movie is based on true events, but at the same time, Tom Jane can do a whole lot better than this. Don't watch this crap unless you wanna be bored silly. $11.89 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Blues, Blues Christmas Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Stander review
$16.39 Christmas and the blues might seem at first like a strange combination, given that the music of the holiday season is usually joyful, hopeful, and bright, but no other time of the year is so good at showing you what you don't have, and what you can't get, and if you have the blues at Christmas, well, it's going to be a pretty heavy dose. This generous two-disc set from Document Records features 52 tracks of vintage African-American Christmas-themed blues and gospel pieces (with a couple of street sermons thrown in) recorded between 1925 and 1955, ranging from down-and-out laments and jailhouse moans to surprising (and occasionally risqué) requests for what Santa can bring down the chimney. Highlights on the first disc include the opening track, the joyous "Christ Was Born on Christmas Morn," recorded in 1925 by comedian and female impersonator Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon; Harry Crafton's "Bring That Cadillac Back" (a Cadillac might not be the best gift if your girlfriend likes to ramble) from 1947; Tampa Red's amazing, ringing slide guitar tone on "Christmas and New Year's Blues" from 1936; and the bizarre, disturbing field recording of "Junior's a Jap Girl's Christmas for His Santa Claus," sung by Willie Blackwell for Alan Lomax in Arkansas in 1942. Other high points include the charming "Christmas Boogie," recorded in 1950 by piano prodigy (he was only ten years old when this recording was made) Frankie "Sugar Chile" Robinson and the intense, bottled-up street-corner sermon "The Wrong Way to Celebrate ...

$10.30 Sidney Poitier--who would later star in such unforgettable films as TO SIR, WITH LOVE; GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER and IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT--won an Academy Award for best actor for his standout performance in this modest, beautiful 1963 film. LILIES OF THE FIELD is directed tenderly and with restraint by Ralph Nelson from a light-handed yet deeply effective screenplay by James Poe, based on a novel by William E. Barrett. Poitier plays the role of Homer Smith, a journeyman laborer, who is roaming the countryside, drifting ...
