$13.09 This album is a sort of summit conference of underground heavy music. Guitarists and vocalists Scott "Wino" Weinrich (the Obsessed, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, the Hidden Hand) and Scott Kelly of Neurosis are grizzled veterans whose hoarse, guttural shouts and instantly recognizable, ...

| | Converge Axe To Fall CD (2009) Digipak
Consummate
$12.75 Converge's eighth studio album is packed with guest performances by kindred spirits from Massachusetts and beyond. "Effigy," one of four songs on the album that comes in under the two-minute mark, features Steve Brodsky and Adam McGrath of Cave In on guitar and that group's drummer, J.R. Conners, behind the kit. Uffe Cederlund of Disfear takes over lead guitar on "Wishing Well," while Steve Von Till of Neurosis sings on "Cruel Bloom" and Genghis Tron' Mookie Singerman does guest vocals on the seven-minute album closer, "Wretched World." But it's the core group that delivers the most astonishing displays of hardcore fury and progressive musical exploration on AXE TO FALL. Opening cut "Dark Horse," propelled by a Disfear-esque riff so insane it'll make you think your CD is playing at the wrong speed, kicks off a breathless sprint that lasts all the way to the doomy, noisy ...

Consummate
$8.09 Principally recorded at G.A. Recording Inc., Evanston, Illinois; Soundcastle and Post Complex, Los Angeles, California; Oasis Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California.
Former Guy lead singer Aaron Hall may provide the powerful vocals, smooth raps and most of the songwriting on THE TRUTH, but it is his collaborations with Vassal Benford that make up the core of Hall's first solo album. The songs co-written by Benford (who also produced, arranged and played most of the instruments on these tracks) are definitely the standouts on this contemporary R&B, hip-hop-styled release. The Vassal-produced opening cut, for instance, has a funky, punchy synth-bass groove, over which Hall wails and raps in fine form. "You Keep Me Crying" features some inventive production techniques by Benford, who uses a thundering bass to dramatically swoop down on an otherwise gentle ballad.
At it's sharpest, THE TRUTH shows off a hip-hop artist who knows his way around a musically smooth vocal style. In fact, Hall has a strong gospel influence in his delivery, even if most of the lyrics are quite secular. The songs are of a mostly sexual nature. Hall's troubles with, and desires toward his "girl," "baby," "honey," "lady" and "nasty girl," are the album's underlying themes.
Guy's brand of new jack swing can be recognized across all of THE TRUTH's beat-rich tracks. But Hall's church-reared, throa

| | Trace Adkins Chrome CD (2001)
Consummate
$8.85 He may sport a cowboy hat and operate out of Nashville, but the brand of country Trace Adkins plays owes little to tradition. Bolstered by a semi-hip-hop beat, the title tune "Chrome" is about as close as one might comfortably like to get to country rap. The wrecked-romance ballad "Help Me Understand" owes more to the radio-friendly ballads of the Eagles than to any cowpoke lament of old. "Thankful Man," despite its blue-collar lyric about honest workin' folks, is shot through with driving rock guitar and accentuated by staccato bursts of synthesizer. The bluesy-guitar-and-drum-loops combo that opens up "Scream" could have come straight off a Beck album. Despite all ...

| | Bottom You're Next CD (2005)
Consummate
$11.99 Chances are few fans remember Bottom, the New York-to-San Francisco transplanted, all-girl stoner rock trio whose impossible-to-find self-released debut album (1999's Maiden Voyage) was followed by a similarly cursed sophomore turn (2001's Feels so Good When You're Gone -- released by a label on the verge of bankruptcy), and then -- silence. Well, even fewer will know what to make of their unexpected return four years later by way of a third, unusually free-form album named You're Next, on new label Small Stone. What may at first appear to be a Melvins-inspired exercise in droning, dread-filled power-chord grinds ("By a Thread," "The Same," "Requiem") and diffuse feedback made tenuous songflesh ("Testimony of the Mad Arab," "Distordo II," "Incantation 13"), is suddenly transformed mid-way through into a wildly experimental song-set. First there's an off-the-cuff solo guitar flight named "Bushmills Jimmy," then a false start ("Two for the Road") that sets up a clunky, traps-led hillbilly swing on "Rainy Day Blues" (apparently an ancient composition dating back to 1989!), and finally a hobo- ...
