George the predictable!
A funny thing about George Antheil, in my opinion: the more I hear his music, the less I like it. George, unlike the 'other' George [Gershwin], comes across as a composer who simply can't make up his mind about the style he wants to achieve. His 'American' symphony could have been composed by any number of 'expats'. Antheil is on safer ground with such short works as 'Capitol of the World', which is easily the most enjoyable piece on the CD. Fine performances from Hugh Wolff and his German orchestra.

Strange but good musician, after all
George Antheil is not a very well known musician in our century. His music is considered mostly as an American imitation of Russian or Slavonic composers such as Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Enescu (Composers who I admire, indeed), thus it is not very well appreciated. Indeed, his music shares a great likeness to the composers named above (Specially the finale of the 3rd Symphony, American Hot-Time Dance and much more less in Mc'Konkey's Ferry), however we can see that his originalty seems to prevail when the work comes to an end, and it contains very rare dissonances that would have been considered as "formalist" in Stalinist USSR. To sum up in Antheil's favour, the work is very American in essence and it seems so fresh and new, because it has little to see with American composers such as Copland or Harris. His style seems to be more approached to more modernist composers as Barber or W.Schuman. It seems that he has developped an unique voice in between this composers. I seriously think that Antheil's music must be considered to be revisited and re-appreciated, because after all, it seems to be worth hearing. I consider this is an excellent performance (even if it is the only one I've heard)

Mediocrity at its finest
George Antheil is one of the best examples of a "flash-in-the-pan" career. Through sheer chutzpah in the 20's, he achieved notoriety and even some musical substance with works like Ballet Mechanique, the Violin Sonatas and the Jazz Symphony. But as soon as he mellowed out as a less radical composer in later years, his worst defects emerged: weak structure and derivative style based on slavish imitation of other composers. Prokofieff is the main model for Antheil's Third Symphony, the spike without the melodic gift or the creative orchestration, especially in the scherzo. The other works wouldn't have raised eyebrows--or temperatures--at a Boston Pops concert. Well produced and recorded, but for what? For the best later-Antheil work, seek out the Fourth symphony, which has one very fine movement with a nice melodies.
