Monteverdi: The Sacred Music, Vol. 2
$15.39 This two-CD compilation, assembled from the Walker Brothers' three albums and various singles released by Philips between 1965 and 1967, gives a good overview of their U.K. history without limiting itself to their hits. The sound quality is good if not exceptional -- one gets the sense that another round of remastering would be in order (and while we're talking about sound, wouldn't one like to see a Mobile Fidelity reissue on the Walker Brothers or, for that matter, Scott Walker's best solo stuff?). And the track order isn't chronological -- their two best-known songs, which were not their first two U.K. singles -- occupy the opening two slots on disc one. So this set is lacking in some attributes that one would, ideally, like to se. On the other hand, all of the songs that one would like to see are here somewhere, and the annotation is thorough if not extensive. For anyone starting a collection of the classic Walker Brothers' material, this set -- which also carries the subtitle "My Ship Is Coming In" -- is a great place to start and finish, assuming that one doesn't wish to own everything that they did during their British period. ~ Bruce Eder
2009 two CD set from the '60s trio, who have become one of the most revered Pop outfits of their time. Though they were not brothers and came from California, The Walker Brothers became international stars with a slew of great singles that were as unique as they were catchy. The British and European audiences were (and remain) their most devoted fanbase, although other countries have come around to The Walker Brothers special kind of magic in recent decades. 36 tracks including 'Make It Easy On Yourself', 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' and many others. Universal.

Monteverdi: The Sacred Music, Vol. 2
$15.29 Originally released several years before Tom Cruise’s take on the incident in the Hollywood film VALKYRIE, this thrilling historical drama details the events leading up to one of the most prominent assassination attempts of Adolph Hitler by his own soldiers. Sebastian Koch (BLACK BOOK) stars as Claus von Stauffenberg, the spirited leader of the well-organized but unfortunately flawed conspiracy.

| | Alexandra DVD (2007)
Monteverdi: The Sacred Music, Vol. 2
$21.49 Russian master Aleksandr Sokurov (THE SUN, RUSSIAN ARK, MOTHER AND SON) has produced another majestic achievement with ALEXANDRA. In a rare instance of working from his own original script, Sokurov tells the simple tale of a woman in the twilight of her life who embarks on a special journey. As the story unfolds, Sokurov's deeper purpose is revealed, resulting in a work that speaks profoundly about the corrosive nature of war. Opera star Galina Vishnevskaya is Alexandra. She hasn't seen her grandson in seven years and, understanding that her life is coming to an end, she decides to visit him at his army camp in war-torn Chechnya. What at first is a beautiful reunion gradually becomes conflicted, as Alexandra is forced to accept the painful realization that she may no longer be the most important figure in her grandson's life. Furthermore, the strain the war is placing on these young men, combined with their restrictive conditions, is even harder for her to bear. When her grandson must return to work, Alexandra floats around the camp, having brief but profound interactions with many different soldiers. While these exchanges vary from the humorous to the dramatic, there is a striking purity and simplicity to Sokurov's overall vision--not to mention Vishnevskaya's unforgettable, heartbreaking performance--that makes ALEXANDRA feel universal and profound.

$14.39 Longstanding friends and collaborators Pianist Martha Argerich and Violinist Gidon Kremer share not so much the spotlight as usual here, but instead separate roles in this program featuring the rarely coupled Mendelssohn Piano and Violin Concerto's. As one would expect, both performances are highly spirited and loaded with surprises. The youthful Orpheus Chamber Orchestra delivers expert support and Deutsche Grammophon's sound is crisp, clear, and well-balanced.
