Purchase Bull's Eye CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Jamey Johnson That Lonesome Song CD (2008)
Bull's Eye
$12.65 Jamey Johnson is a successful songwriter on Nashville's Music Row, who has authored hits by George Strait and Trace Adkins. THAT LONESOME SONG, Johnson's debut album as a performer, is a happy throwback to the outlaw country of the 1970s, with Johnson's gruff, character-filled vocals surrounded by a small, rocking combo including pedal steel, organ, and fiddles. Rather than the polished soft rock of so much contemporary Nashville product, THAT LONESOME SONG is a rough and ready honky-tonk album that compares favorably to Waylon Jennings and early Steve Earle. Highlights include "Mowin' Down the Roses" and the celebratory "Between Jennings and Jones."
Personnel: Jamey Johnson (vocals, guitars, tubular bells); Scott Welch, Wayd Battle (electric guitar); Eddie Long (steel guitar, dobro); Jim "Moose" Brown (keyboards); Kevin Grantt (bass guitar); Dave Macafee (drums); Curtis Wright, Wyatt Beard (background vocals).
| | Lyle Lovett Natural Forces CD (2009)
Bull's Eye
$12.39 Retreating to generally quieter territory after the somewhat splashy IT'S NOT BIG IT'S LARGE, Lyle Lovett also backs away from original tunes on NATURAL FORCES, choosing to devote the bulk of the 11-track album to other writers. Covers are common for Lovett, but not since 1998's STEP INSIDE THIS HOUSE has he spent so much time singing other's songs, and he revisits some of the same composers as before, picking tunes from Townes Van Zandt and Vince Bell, while co-writing "It's Rock and Roll" with Robert Earl Keen. As before, Lyle gravitates toward gentle, moody songs, with Tommy Elskes' slyly sarcastic blues, "Bohemia," being the liveliest of the bunch, opting to give NATURAL FORCES some humor and tempo through his originals, particularly the bawdy, rollicking "Pantry" and the dirty jump blues ...
| | Levon Helm Electric Dirt CD (2009)
Bull's Eye
$15.65 Not that anyone's keeping score, but as Band alumni records go, Levon is pulling way ahead of the pack with his second keeper in as many tries in the '00s. ELECTRIC DIRT finds the Arkansas legend building on its critically acclaimed predecessor, DIRT FARMER, and bringing the democratic ebullience of his weekly Midnight Ramble live sessions (held in his barn) to record. Ramble stalwarts Larry Campbell and Amy Helm (Levon's daughter) appear all over the album (Campbell as producer and multi-instrumentalist; Amy Helm providing genetically in tune harmonies), while a loose, New Orleans vibe pervades courtesy of Allen Toussaint's horn arrangements (covers of the Grateful Dead's "Tennessee Jed", Randy Newman's "Kingfish" and other album standouts). The album, naturally, belongs to Helm, who is in stunningly assured vocal form (remarkable for a throat cancer survivor) and whose slack rustic groove remains irresistible (who else can make a mandolin sound like funk instrument). ...
| | Billy Gilman Classic Christmas CD (2000)
Bull's Eye
$5.95 Twelve-year-old country wunderkind Billy Gilman--younger than Britney Spears, and at least twice as wholesome--tackles the usual holiday staples such as "White Christmas" here, along with some soon-to-be standards--if "Warm and Fuzzy" doesn't get you, you just can't be had. These all go down as easily as fried chicken, pizza, and hamburgers (his favorite foods, as we're informed in the liner notes).
Gilman retains his pre-pubescent Johnny Mathis-type vocal sound, still sounding somewhat androgynous for a country singer. A mainstream crossover probably looms, once his voice breaks.
Recorded ...

Bull's Eye
$5.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Country Christmas gets wrapped up boogie blues rockin' style thanks to The Tractors' Have Yourself a Tractor's Christmas. A little manipulative, perhaps, to redo their hit single "Baby Likes to Rock It" under the guise of "Santa Claus ...
| | George Strait 50 Number Ones CDs (2004)
Bull's Eye
$16.69 From the early 1980s onward, there's been no greater champion of traditional country-music values in the mainstream (and none more successful) than George Strait. Like a virtual Ramones of country, he's remained unshakeable in his devotion to a straightforward, no-frills aesthetic of which he's become the unquestioned standard-bearer. This populist stance has accordingly resounded with huge numbers of listeners; if you thought it was impressive when Alabama released a hits collection containing 40 Number One country hits, try Strait's 50 NUMBER ONES on for size.
In keeping with Strait's singular approach, the passage of time is difficult to notice here. From the wistful 1982 lost-love tale "Fool Hearted Memory" to the one new song, 2004's "I Hate Everything," Strait's amiable mix of honky-tonk, Western Swing, and bar-room ballads is remarkably consistent, providing the perfect framework for each sentiment just as comfortably as his warm, inviting voice serves the songs. Unlike many artists' best-of collections, there's no chronological peak beyond which the hits stop coming; 50 NUMBER ...

| | Alexis Jo Shameful Joy CD (2001)
Bull's Eye
$5.49 Musical partners since 1998, vocalist Jo Alexis, and producer/multi instrumentalist Richard Alexander, have collaborated on four albums together. The first, You Are Just Like Me (2000), explores folk rock stylings, textures and themes. With echoes of Sarah Mclachlan, Mazzy Star, and the Cowboy Junkies, it presents of song cycle of love, loss, longing, and realization. The second, Time To Go (2001), an EP, explores alternative country stylings, and the perennial country theme of : 'leavin' that no good man'. The third, Shameful Joy (2002), also an EP, explores Bjork and Chemical Brothers territory with two extended pop electronica (or perhaps 'folktronica') pieces (with a third, a homage to 80's new wave). The fourth album, Sing Through Me (2003), explores ethereal world music electronica sounds and textures, in the mode of Dido, Moby, Goldfrapp, St. ...
