Mambru 3
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, ...

| | Shuggie Otis Inspiration Information CD (1974)
Mambru 3
$10.89 This is part of LuakaBop's World Psychedelic Classics series.
Ignored upon its release in 1974 and celebrated upon its reissue in 2001, Shuggie Otis' fourth and last album Inspiration Information exists out of time -- a record that was of its time, but didn't belong of it; a record that was idiosyncratic but not necessarily visionary. It was psychedelic soul that was released far too late to be part of any zeitgeist and it was buried at the time. Yet no matter what Luaka Bop's grand poobah David Byrne claims on the sticker -- he says Shuggie's "trippy R&B jams are equal to Marvin's and Curtis', but somehow more contemporary sounding...closer to D'Angelo meets DJ Shadow" -- this isn't revolutionary. It can occasionally sound modern, such as on the rolling head trip "XL-30," ...

Mambru 3
$12.79 Keali`i was born and raised on Maui, growing up in Lahaina and spending weekends and summers at his grandmother's house in Pa`ia on the windward side of the island. His passion for the language and culture of Hawai`i led him to become the founding director for Punana Leo O Maui, the Hawaiian language immersion school. He also founded his own hula school, Halau Ke`alaokamaile, in 1980 and has won numerous awards over the years. Keali`i is also recognized as one of only five Master Chanters in Hawai`i.In 1994 he independently produced and released a collection of Hawaiian traditional and contemporary songs and chants entitled "Kawaipunahele." His subsequent music releases, "Lei Hali`a" (1995), "E O Mai" (1997), "Melelana" (1999), and "Ke`alaokamaile (2003) have cemented his place in the Hawaiian music industry. All told, he has been awarded 19 Na Hoku Hanohano ...
| | Tropical Tribute To The Beatles CD (1996) With DVD
Mambru 3
$15.05 On December 31, 1962, the Beatles performed the classic song "Besame Mucho" at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, in recognition of the highly emotive music from Latin America. Four decades later, RMM decided to bring the Beatles' greatest hits back, this time played by some of the most prominent Latin artists in a tropical tribute to one of the most influential acts in popular music ever. After the opening track, "Hey Jude," by Puerto Rican singer Tony Vega, Tito Nieves and the percussion virtuoso Tito Puente deliver a freewheeling "Let It Be." The Cuban soloist Guianko performs a salsa version of "Can't Buy Me Love," followed by Johnny Rivera's "Hard Day's Night." Latin diva Celia Cruz sings her own version of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," while New York-based Ray Sepúlveda and Manny Manuel do the same on "The Fool on the Hill" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," respectively. Domingo Quiñones' cover of "Day Tripper" is followed by "Lady Madonna" by Venezuelan-born Oscar D'Leon, and Jesus Enríquez joins Cuban Miles Peña on "With a Little Help From My Friends." RMM Tropical Tribute to the Beatles comes to an end with a stylish version of "Yesterday" by Cheo Feliciano ...
| | Original Memphis Blues Brothers CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Mambru 3
$16.65 This originally came out as a 1989 LP on Ace; look, however, for the expanded 2000 Ace CD, as it increases the number of tracks from 15 to 26 with the addition of material by B.B. King, Ike Turner, and Rosco Gordon. All of the songs were recorded in Memphis in the early 1950s by the Bihari brothers, and much of it released on 45s on their Modern, RPM, and Meteor labels, though some of it wasn't issued for decades. This was two or three years before the ascendancy of Memphis rockabilly, and blues/R&B crossover ruled the roost in the city. The CD is thus a rough snapshot of local electric blues just as it began to be recorded often, with some of the earliest sides by Bobby Bland, Junior Parker, Johnny Ace, and the aforementioned King, Turner, and Gordon, as well as the nearly unknown Earl Forest. In comparison to the somewhat more famous early Memphis electric blues released in the early-to-mid-fifties on Sun, this is a little more sluggish, and more tilted toward barroom piano styles. The songwriting, too, is not as sharp and electric as the best Sun stuff. All that taken into consideration, this is still a noteworthy supplement to those Sun recordings, as a document of the sound of Memphis electric blues -- and, by extension, rock'n'roll -- in its infancy. The band plays some serious havoc with timekeeping on Parker's chaotic "You're My Angel," which sounds like a drunken afterhours jam; Bland is well on his way to establishing his foggy urban blues delivery on his two singles. ...
