Singer-songwriter Dino Valente was a member of Quicksilver Messenger Service and a man about the scene in psychedelic 1960s San Francisco. Valente's one solo full-length, produced by Bob Johnson, is something of a cult item.
Dino Valente's sole album recalls the one issued by another San Francisco artist signed to CBS in the late '60s, Skip Spence: quirky, lyrically vague, folky yet psychedelic, and nearly devoid of commercial potential in spite of its largely pleasant (if moody) melodies and textures. Valente, however, was not as intriguing a lyricist as Spence, nor as intensely soulful a vocalist, and overall much sunnier in tone. Valente had a rather whiny voice, so it was wise to put so much echo on both his 12-string guitar (which accounts for most of the instrumentation on the record) and vocals, which both covered up some of his vocal deficiencies and added a sheath of mystery. Listening to his songs is like listening to some hippie trying to talk a vulnerable, confused, attractive girl, on the rebound from a failed romance, into taking up with him as a panacea to her problems: phrases are uttered and rejoinders offered, but one can't be sure exactly what the situation is or where it's leading. It's not the insufferable experience this description might lead you to expect, mostly because of the enticing (if similar-sounding) melancholy of the tunes. The CD reissue adds two previously unreleased tracks that are similar to the rest of the album in both mood and quality. ~ Richie Unterberger

Dino Valente album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative ...

Dino Valente CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that ...
| | Dog Waggers Chasin Tales CD (2005)
Dino Valente music CDs
$12.15 They've been called a "folkier Last Train Home," a "rootsier Barenaked Ladies," and one fellow who smelled kinda funny even went so far as to say "their songs sound like stuff from the Grateful Dead's American Beauty." But if you ask a member of the Dog Waggers -- well, at least the one who smells kinda funny -- he'll tell you that musical comparisons like that are flattering, but don't really describe their style. So they've coined a term that they think does: Virginia Gruenegrass music. What's that, you ask? Well, it's a little bit Old Dominion living and Northern Virginia gridlock rockin' ... a little bit Lone Star State longin' and dance hall vampin' ... and a little bit down home anywhere, banjo/mandolin front porch pickin'.All those styles -- and a few more -- can be heard on the Dog Waggers' debut CD, "Chasin' Tales," which was released in early August 2005 and celebrated with a rollicking release party before a packed-house Jammin' Java in Vienna, VA."Chasin' Tales" features 13 original tunes co-written by Dog Wagger founders, Dave Bloom and Geoff Pemble. Hunter Jones, the band's keyboard/banjo/harmonica maven penned one song, "Guess it's True," which closes the CD. "Chasin' Tales" was produced and mixed by Geoff Pemble in his home studio. Other band members include: Rick Thiele, on bass; Kurt Sayce, on percussion; and Peder Maarbjerg, on mandolin. The Dog Waggers were formed in the spring of 2004 after Dave asked Geoff to help him record a few songs he'd written and wanted to enter in songwriting competitions. With a few of their demos in hand (Bloom is still waiting to make the cut in one of those contests, by the way), they asked Jones, Thiele and Sayce, with whom they play in a band at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA, to sign on for this more secular singing and playing venture. Maarbjerg, who played with Pemble in a once-popular, but long-defunct local cover band called The Frivolous Suits and is not a spiritual Revelator, completed the line-up.For more information about the band, visit their website at: thedogwaggers.com And talk to us at: info@thedogwaggers.comDog Wagger RAQs (if ya have to ask, that's 'rarely asked questions ...
