P/A. Pt.1 Of A 2 Album Release For 2005.Prod.By Rick Rubin.
System of a Down: Shavo Odadjian (bass guitar); Daron Malakian, Serj Tankian, John Dolmayan. Personnel: Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar); Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards); John Dolmayan (drums). Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. Editors: Dana Nielsen; Jason Lader. Adjectives like "ambitious," "jagged," and "startling" have always defined System of a Down, and their third official full-length is no different. Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part -- the first side -- of what's essentially a double album. The records' packaging would even slot together, making the eventual Mezmerize/Hypnotize whole. Appropriately then, there's an intro to System's first new material since 2001's brilliant Toxicity. On "Soldier Side" Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian harmonize as they do throughout the record, and Malakian's guitar has a mournful, Eastern air. But it's just a lull before "B.Y.O.B.," a thrash assault pierced with rabid and incredulous screams. "Why do they always send the poor?" Suddenly the gears switch, and the song stomps in crunchy half-time as its lyrics riff with a sick grin on cultural ignorance. The government's lying, System's saying, but "Blast off!/It's party time." The vocal exploration between Tankian and Malakian on Mezmerize is a thrill -- they spur each other on like a two-headed hardcore hero. Their intermingling voices make "Cigaro" more aggressive, frantic, operatic, and totally bananas; they'd be triumphant over the break in "Violent Pornography" if they weren't spitting out lines like "Choking chicks and sodomy." The fantastic "Pornography" is a rusty shiv of absurdity, another example of System's ability to effectively skewer society with little more than hyper guitar, blistering percussion, and weird turns of phrase. Their volatile mix of righteousness, wordiness, odd meters, and thrash has balanced System's activism since their self-titled debut, making them "unique heavy music" over the much more problematic "unique, heavily political music." And Mezmerize doesn't fail to be unique. "Old School Hollywood" essays the bizarre experience of a celebrity baseball game ("Tony Danza cuts in line!") over keyboard effects from "Beat It" and a brutally simplistic rhythm, "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song" is more twisted-tongue histrionics and explosive playing, and Tankian and Malakian's harmonies are the catalyst (again!) for making "Revenga" a truly feral epic. System of a Down -- what's another adjective for "awesome"? ~ Johnny Loftus Many rock bands talk endlessly about their "sound," refining a basic formula until it's either perfect or perfectly boring. System of a Down, however, developed a loyal fanbase with the opposite approach--the group mixes genres so freely that describing what their music sounds like is nearly impossible. Sure, SOAD is, at its core, a metal band, but on MEZMERIZE's first two songs alone, vocalist/guitarist/mastermind Daron Malakian and crew zigzag their way though Beach Boys-like stacked vocal harmonies, Anthrax-esque hardcore thrash, Cameo-style funk, and prog rock of a CARESS OF STEEL-era Rush variety. "Revenga" adds a touch of swooping Freddie Mercury vocal drama to the mix, while "Sad Statue" sports a guitar riff that sounds like a Greek bouzouki. Even sharper, tighter, and more ambitious than System of a Down's previous albums, MEZMERIZE makes for a consistently surprising listen.
Rolling Stone (No. 975, pp.67-70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "[E]verything on MEZMERIZE hits and splits with viciously honed purpose..." Spin (p.101) - "Moods are muddled even more artfully on MEZMERIZE." - Grade: B+ System Of A Down Mezmerize Songs Mezmerize Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Really Good Album. Although I still think System of a Down's first album was the best this one is good too. Its not as heavy as the first SOAD album but it has its moments. B.Y.O.D is really heavy and is a great song. Because of songs like Revenga, This Cocaine Make Me Feel Like I'm On This Song, Violent Pornography, Question, and Lost in Hollywood this is a close second to the first album. I recommend before you buy this to sample thier first album because it is truely better. Submitted by Clint (Aurora, NE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

I LOVE IT! I first started listening to System when B.Y.O.B. came out on the radio and decided to buy Mezmerize and loved it. The best songs are B.Y.O.B., Cigaro, and Violent Pornagraphy. After that I decided that I needed more, so I bought Toxicity and that was great too, but I think Mezmerize would be a better choice. Rock On! it's okay old system was definently the best. And you have to agree with justin c. down their about their music being simple.also It's annoying to have politics shoved down your throt constantly.I have to admit though their guitar tabs are great when your a begginnig guitarist.simple but not mary had a little lamb simple.Half the songs on this cd are pretty cool and fun though.Like revenga and violent pornagraphy. $7.09 STEAL THIS ALBUM contains outtakes and previously unreleased tracks. STEAL THIS ALBUM contains outtakes and previously unreleased tracks. Audio Mixer: Andy Wallace. In most cases, bands put out these odds and sods collections for die-hard fans, to fulfill a record deal, or to stall while they're taking seven years to record a follow-up. Steal This Album!, on the other hand, definitely doesnot fit any of those ideals. First, it's almost impossible to think of this as an "outtakes" record. System of a Down has managed to make tracks from a seven-year period sound cohesive without having to embellish or sacrifice. Some might argue that maybe they're just treading water. Not true. ...

$12.39 Audioslave: Tim Commerford (bass guitar); Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Brad Wilk. Personnel: Chris Cornell (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Brad Wilk (drums). Audio Mixer: Brendan O'Brien. Photographer: Ethan Russell. Given that most supergroups last little longer than a single album, it was easy to assume that Audioslave -- the pairing of Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell and the instrumental trio at the core of Rage Against the Machine -- was a one-off venture. That suspicion was given weight by their eponymous 2002 debut, which sounded as if Cornell wrote melodies and lyrics to tracks RATM wrote after ...

Mezmerize
$14.95 Ruffians was born out of friendship and the mutual musical interests of its founding members Craig Behrhorst (Guitar/Background Vocals), Luke Bowman (Drums) and Chris Atchison (Guitar/Background Vocals). The band debuted at the famed San Francisco punk rock venue the Mabuhay Gardens in December ’83. Soon after, the band changed their line-up and recruited long time friend Dan Moura on bass. It then became evident that the group was in need of a stronger front man who would be able to take them to the next level. After placing numerous “vocalist wanted” ads and too many auditions to count, they finally found a singer/front-man in that of Carl Albert. Management and Band agreed that Carl was the stuff that legends are made of… and just in the nick of time. The band was scheduled to play a gig in less than 2 weeks opening up for Alcatrazz at the Kabuki Theatre in San Francisco.Hailing from the mountain town of Sonora California, Carl was more than anyone could ask for. With the dual guitar sound of Craig and Chris along with Luke’s powerhouse drumming, Carl’s powerful and melodic vocals had given the band the sound they had been looking for. Ruffians then hit the Bay Area club circuit with a bang! Ruffians played many shows throughout 1984 and were definitely on their way, securing support slots for bands such as Loudness, Y&T, Dokken, U.F.O., Saxon, and Savatage. The band began to headline shows throughout the Bay Area, as well as co-headline shows with their hometown friends Exodus, Death Angel, and Vicious Rumors. In 1984 Ruffians recorded a 4-track demo tape featuring the tracks “Fight For Your Life,” Wasteland,” “Bad Boys Cut Loose,” and “Eyes of Fire.” The demo was well received in the States and abroad, by Fans and the Metal Press alike. However, Ruffians were neither a “big hair” band nor were they thrash metal. They were a difficult act to sell to the major label executives at the time. This was the early days of heavy metal, prior to the genre becoming part of the mainstream as it is today. As such, Ruffians’ management decided to take matters into their own hands by forming it’s own label, Victory Records, to release the band’s debut album. In January 1985 Ruffians entered Studio D in Sausalito, California to lay down tracks for the six-track Mini-LP. Released in May, the EP was quickly picked up by over 200 College radio stations in the United States as well as charting in Europe and Japan. The EP received great reviews from the international and domestic press, and the band’s fan base ...
