The U.S. nuclear sub Tigerfish churns toward the North Pole. Its mission: rescue the imperiled members of weather outpost Ice Station Zebra. On board are Cmdr. Ferraday and his crew, several unexpected arrivals with secret orders?and enough suspicions, suspense and twists to make Ice Station Zebra an engrossing espionage thriller. The Cold War heats up as John Sturges (The Great Escape) directs Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Patrick McGoohan, Jim Brown and more in this epic adventure nominated for two Academy Awards?* and featuring taut action set pieces above and below the ice. All hands to stations for excitement! Director: John Sturges. This exciting cold war action-adventure film focuses on an American sub commander who is ordered to a desolate outpost at the North Pole and there becomes involved in a deadly struggle with the Soviet military.
John Sturges's adaptation of Alistair MacLean's novel stars Rock Hudson as submarine commander James Ferraday. When a weather-monitoring station near the North Pole is nearly destroyed by fire, he's ostensibly sent to find out what went wrong. But since he's been ordered to bring along Capt. Leslie Anders (Jim Brown) and a platoon of Marines, British agent David Jones (Patrick McGoohan), and Russian defector Boris Vaslov (Ernest Borgnine), he realizes he's being kept in the dark about the true nature of the mission. Eventually it becomes clear that the USS Tigerfish is in a race with a Russian sub to recover reconaissance film crucial to national defense that was being carried aboard a spacecraft that crashed near the polar ice cap. When the sub is sabotaged--causing it to sink perilously close to a depth that would lead to an explosion--it becomes clear that a double agent is on board, but Ferraday doesn't have enough evidence to arrest anyone. Although the film is often remembered as the one chosen for ad nauseam viewing by Howard Hughes, it's a well-made combination of action and suspense, boasting a fine score by Michel Legrand. Theatrical release: October 23, 1968.
The film gained notoriety from Howard Hughes's obsessive viewing. Ice Station Zebra Reviews: "[An] exciting 1968 popcorn flick."-- Susan King, Los Angeles Times "[A] Cold War thriller that relies on claustrophobic tension."

Ice Station Zebra Movie Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Great action movie This movie gets your thought process going. Rock Hudson is very convincing as a sub commander. Patrick McGoohan as usual plays a good spy. All around a very enjoyable movie to watch with someone you love. Cold War Sub Flick Ice Station Zebra moves along in its 1st half with first-rate performances by Hudson, Borgnine & especially, Patrick McGoohan. The surface sub shots are breathtaking, even today, with excellent underwater model work. The 2nd half slows to a crawl with dated outside-sets & dialogue, but picks up at it's surprise ending. Still worth a wide-screen look. Submitted by Paul (Baltimore, Md) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mayhem at the North Pole I first saw this movie when it first premiered in 1968 and my older sister who was visiting from out of town took me to see it at the Loews Paradise theater. The theme of the Cold War with the U.S. and the Soviet Union being adversaries on the brink of war was very relavant at the time. Anyone who watches this movie today can still enjoy a very suspense filled movie, good acting, dialogue and top notch special effects of the period. This is one of my personal all time favorite movies and I couldn't wait for it to be available DVD. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is a suspense buff, submarine enthusiat or just a plain lover of good cinema. Submitted by DM (New York, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Don't Miss this Socko Flick This may the greatest movie you've never seen. It is so well done. Rock Hudson carries the part with great excellence and Patrick McGoohan and Ernest Borgnine fulfill their roles with finese. Its an excellent script and a set and special effects that hold up to today's computerized hoopla. This gutsy movie is not just well done, its somehow tasteful down to the millimeter
while flaunting a scrappiness any pug would admire. You'll go nuts trying to figure out who done it and where is it, convinced that you're part of the scenario. Submitted by Preston (Yonkers, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
