Instead, songs like "Roses" and "Home Again" are quite traditional, building on smooth, accessible melodic passages and themes of love and longing in a way that fits Dirty Vegas for adult-contemporary radio. Though Dirty Vegas is largely considered an electronic act, the programming on ONE takes a back seat to Smith, Harris, and Harris's heartfelt songwriting, and, while there are plenty of synthesizers and stylish production flourishes, the album falls firmly in the camp of light, mainstream pop.
ONE is Dirty Vegas's follow-up to their successful debut, which sold well on the basis of the hit single "Days Go By." But Steve Smith, Ben Harris, and Paul Harris have taken a step away from the dance-pop of their first album, moving instead in the direction of guitar-based, radio-friendly pop. Like many of their contemporaries in the mid-2000s, Dirty Vegas worship at the altar of breezy 1980s synth-pop, but ONE bears not a trace of the detached, arty feel of many post-punk-revival bands.
Dirty Vegas: Steve Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Paul Harris , Ben Harris (guitar, keyboards).
One Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Catchy Pop Confections It's not as synth/dance-oriented as their previous album, but the overall songwriting has improved and diversified. This is a solid pop/rock collection, with "Walk Into the Sun" and "Human Love" among the standouts. Submitted by Brian (Cleveland, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dumbing down towards AOR Their first album was a real fushion of pop and dance, this one is lightweight, as if chasing the $ is more important than making great music. On the other hand if you want something to ignore then this is great music for the kitchen. Submitted by Pete (Cotswolds, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Better than before I think they renewed themselves and proved that their music is the best. Great upbeat music ... I LOVE THIS CD. Submitted by Thereza (NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mediocre, despite the effort This band rose to prominence largely on the strength of "Days Go By". Alas, that song was unique, even to the album it was released on. "One" attempts to continue the sound of the rest of their debut album, and fails even at that. Most of these songs would be wholly forgettable, except that they try very had to dress them up. This only serves to highlight their failings. Submitted by AbslomRob (Ottawa, On) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

One album
$10.45 THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES contains vintage photographs and a conversation with Justin Hayward.
Recorded between 1964 and 1988. Includes liner notes by John Reed.
By keeping it simple and sticking to the hits, this collection successfully relates the story of this pioneering band. The Moody Blues began as a Gerry & the Pacemakers-like, R&B-influenced band fronted by sad-voiced singer Denny Laine, who is heard here on "Go Now." Laine was replaced by Justin Hayward, keyboardist Mike Pinder brought in a Mellotron, and the band hooked up with the London Symphony Orchestra to make the first orchestral-rock album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, from which "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" are included on this album.
Over the next few years the band banged out several gem albums that were full of a distinctive mix of folk-tinged ballads and ambitious prog-rock. Cuts from this period take up a healthy piece of this collection. ...
| | Dirty Vegas CD (2002)
One CD music
$11.69 DIRTY VEGAS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award For Best Recording Package.
For those who remember the days when electronica was known simply as disco, this collection of instrumental and vocal tracks should bring back some happy memories. If you think you've never heard Dirty Vegas before, they supply the music to the car commercial where the trendy girl is being driven around town (either looking for the next hot club or a parking space) doing various robotic movements to a spare electronic backing track. The rest of the set sounds similar; midtempo beats, infectious tunes, and some passably hip-hop-like vocals courtesy of this British trio's otherwise decidedly pop-oriented ...
| | Lisa Stansfield Complete Collection CD (2003) Box Set
One music CDs
$67.85 This deluxe, limited-edition box set compiles all of Lisa Stansfield's full-length releases along with 15 extra songs.
Remastered reissues are individually cased in digipaks and are collectively packaged in a box with lift-off top.
Complete Collection is a six-disc, U.K.-only set celebrating the breadth and depth of Lisa Stansfield's extensive and impressive career. It includes her five studio albums -- Affection; Real Love; So Natural; Lisa Stansfield; and Face Up -- as well as an exclusive sixth disc, with recordings from a 1992 Wembley date, club mixes (including a great Massive Attack version of "Live Together"), B-sides, and three songs from Stansfield's Blue Zone days. Not enough? Each studio album is augmented with at least two bonus tracks. Complete Collection is definitely the most comprehensive Lisa Stansfield retrospective; it borders on overkill. But since ...

| | Killers Sam's Town CD (2006)
One CD music
$11.99 On the 2006 follow-up to their wildly successful debut, HOT FUSS, the Killers' continue their torrid affair with1980s New Wave, but manage to incorporate the sounds of that era, particularly heavy use of synthesizers, more seamlessly into the mix. This is due, at least in part, to the presence of veteran producers Flood and Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, U2), who help to make the tracks on SAM'S TOWN both brighter and edgier than earlier Killers tunes. While the Las Vegas-based act's Britpop-influenced songs are still marked by Brandon Flower's emotive vocals and bold synth lines, Dave Keuning's guitar riffs are amped up on much of the record, as exemplified by the urgent single "When We ...
| | Dillinger Four Versus God CD (2000)
One music CDs
$11.69 The Dillinger Four are punk rock incarnate, and Versus God, the record by this exemplary crew of spry fellows from Minneapolis, is a punchy and rip-roaring classic. The general theme of the band, gleaned from its lyrics, appears to be seizing one's life back from whatever institution is currently fouling it up, living it to the utmost, and partying well past closing time. Song titles that support this theory include "Get Your Studyhall Outta My Recess," "Maximum Piss & Vinegar," and "Wrecktheplacefantastic." This is undoubtedly the Dillinger Four's most impressive work to date and the band ...
| | Cher Essential Collection CD (2001)
One songs
$12.65 Recorded between 1965 and 1982. Includes liner notes by Robyn Flans.
In her lengthy career, from 1965 to 1999, Cher scored singles charts entries on Imperial, Kapp, MCA, Warner Bros., Casablanca, Geffen, and Reprise Records. Because the hits are spread among three major labels (the Imperial catalog is owned by EMI; the Kapp, MCA, Casablanca, and Geffen catalogs by Universal; and the Warner Bros. and Reprise catalogs by Warner), putting together a compilation on her is a nightmare. Nevertheless, following her 1999 comeback with "Believe," Universal released four compilations in less than three years, the fourth being reissue division Hip-O's Essential Collection. The four are aimed at slightly different audiences, but there's some overlap: five songs -- "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," "Dark Lady," "Half-Breed," "Take Me Home," and "The Way of Love" -- appear on all four. If I Could Turn Back Time: Greatest Hits focuses primarily on the singer's 1987-1991 Geffen hits; The Best of Cher: 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection is a budget compilation of Kapp, MCA, and Casablanca hits; and The Way of Love: The Cher Collection is a double CD that licenses some of the Imperial hits, but fails to include any of the Geffen ones. The single-disc Essential Collection (presumably intended for fans who want more than the Millennium set, but less than The Way of Love) is actually a ...

| | Pickin On Pickin' On Alan Jackson CD (2002)
One CD music
$15.19 With instrumental covers of Nashville country star Alan Jackson's hits and one original composition inspired by his music ("Franklin Road"), Pickin' on Alan Jackson gives honky tonk and contemporary country the bluegrass makeover. Creative arrangements with guitar, mandolin, banjo, and dobro add a new angle to slick country tunes like "Livin' on Love" and "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow." But Pickin' on Alan Jackson lacks the inventive crossover appeal of other titles in the Pickin' On series, like Pickin' on the Who, Pickin' on the Black Crowes, and Pickin' on Lynyrd Skynyrd. Despite beautiful playing, it seems that Pickin' on Alan Jackson is dangerously close to the bluegrass version of Muzak. Hardcore bluegrass fans will be put off by the countrypolitan flavor, ...
