It's a Funky Thing to Do was Hank Crawford's final recording for Atlantic after a commercially successful ten-year run. The soulful altoist is backed by a funky rhythm section (either Eric Gale or Cornell Dupree on guitar, keyboardist Richard Tee, Chuck Rainey or Ron Carter on electric bass, and drummer Bernard Purdie) that often sounds as if it is just going through the motions. Crawford plays well, as usual but, other than "Parker's Mood," none of the seven selections are particularly memorable nor do they stand out from the crowd. ~ Scott Yanow

4 stars Hank Crawford is too funky!!
A nice jazz-soul outing for Hank. His last album for Atlantic, he went out in grand style. A must have for Hank fans - and a peek of what was to come @ CTI!!! Great effort.

Carolina Breakdown
Etta Baker Carolina Breakdown CD  (2005)

It's A Funky Thing To Do
CD $18.99  5 stars Audio Samples
MMSeries#55/ Recorded 88-90/Morganton, NCSisters Cora and Etta Reid, born in 1907 and 1913, grew up in the Johns River township of Caldwell County, North Carolina, a place where the foothills of the Piedmont transform into the escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Their parents, Boone and Sallie, claimed European American, African American and Native American ancestry. The diverse heritage of the family has been acknowledged for generations by members of the Johns River community and even by federal Census takers, who have listed her fatherÂąs family as mulatto as far back as 1850. Partly because of their background, the Reid family socialized and made music with both white, African American, and mixed race families within Caldwell County. Boone Reid, who gave his daughters their first lessons, was well versed in both mountain string band music and early blues. Boone played banjo, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, and Jews harp and organized a family string band that featured Etta on fiddle, Cora on guitar, and himself on banjo. On many weekends the family walked to neighborsÂą houses in and around Johns River to make music. They were also paid to play dances for businessmen and their families who would retreat from the nearby town of Lenoir to cabins on WilsonÂąs Creek for a weekend of leisure and entertainment. Etta eventually gave up the fiddle and later in life took up the banjo, in part as a tribute to her father.By EttaÂąs accounts Boone Reid was also an extraordinary guitar player. He learned much of his style and repertory in Caldwell County though early blues like Spoonful, that he re-titled Carolina Breakdown, were heard when the family was living near Chase City in eastern Virginia. Other tunes that Etta learned on guitar from her father include Never Let Your Deal Go Down, Crow Jane, Dew Drop, Railroad Bill, Bully of The Town, John Henry, and Round My Back Door Selling Coal. Like all great artists, Etta has made these pieces her own by adding new twists and turns. She has ...

Tiefweite Stille
Mathias Grassow Tiefweite Stille CD  (2007)

It's A Funky Thing To Do
CD $17.69
Mathias Grassow was born in Wiesbaden Germany in 1963. From the start, music has always been a deep passion. He played drums and guitar in the 70's and moved on to keyboards in the early 80's. Mathias became increasingly fascinated with the flexibility and possibility inherent in keyboards and electronics and created experimental electronic music between traditional German and 'New Age' styles. Since the late 80's he has specialized in synthesizer drones and myriad forms of overtone music and explored their effect on the human psyche (similar to the old Indian Nada yoga) by using his voice, tambouras, zithers, flutes, guitars, singing bowls, ...
Anywhere I Lay My Head
Scarlett Johansson Anywhere I Lay My Head CD  (2008)

It's A Funky Thing To Do
CD $15.65  2.8 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
The debut album by the actress is comprised almost entirely of Tom Waits covers, with one Scarlett original, 'Song for Jo', as its centerpiece. Dave Sitek produced and members of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Celebration, and Stars Like Fleas play on the release. A pair of tracks; Falling Down and Fannin' Stree feature guest vocals from David Bowie. Warner. 2008. Much like her fellow young Hollywood bombshell Zooey Deschanel, who made an entirely credible indie rock album with acoustic hipster M. Ward as She and Him earlier in 2008, Scarlett Johansson chose to capitalize on her indie film credibility when releasing her debut album. Produced by David Andrew Sitek of TV On The Radio and featuring guest appearances from David Bowie (who sings backing vocals on two tracks) and members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration, ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD consists of 10 songs by bohemian hero Tom Waits plus one Sitek-Johansson original, "Song For Jo." Johansson does not have a conventionally pretty voice, but her Nico-like delivery, all cool burnished tones and deadpan anti-emotion, has its charms; more importantly, it's a better fit to the hazy, vaguely psychedelic arrangements than a more traditional vocal instrument would be. Though albums by actors have a long history of being cringeworthy, ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD is a quirky but entirely credible covers set.
As an actress, Scarlett Johansson often gives herself over to being an object of fantasy -- not necessarily in a purely carnal fashion, but something rather more complicated: wish fulfillment for her directors. Sofia Coppola turned Scarlett into a romanticized version of herself, Woody Allen was comfortable casting her as both a lethal sophisticated seductress and ditsy bombshell, while even Michael Bay turned her into some kind of empty cloned sex kitten. Given this history, perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise that her debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, is an extension of this pattern, as Dave Sitek -- pivotal member of TV on the Radio, producer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Foals -- helps turn Scarlett into a 4AD diva, partially with the assistance of Ivo Watts, who helped sequence the album. And yet, it is a surprise that she gives herself over to Sitek so willingly that it's impossible to tell what parts of the album were driven by Johansson and what parts are wish fulfillments from Sitek, who seems to be bent on creating his own dream ...
